Sony fined £250k over 'preventable' PSN hack

4.6
Sony is facing a £250,000 penalty for what is deemed a 'security failure' during the PlayStation Network hack that affected 77 million accounts in April 2011.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) stated that the attack was preventable, and that there was "no disguising that Sony is a business that should have known better".

Sony is now preparing an appeal, in order to reverse the ruling.

"PlayStation Europe notes that the ICO recognises Sony was the victim of 'a focused and determined criminal attack' and that 'there is no evidence that encrypted payment card details were accessed', and that 'personal data is unlikely to have been used for fraudulent purposes'."

Sony chief executive, Kaz Hirai apologized for the security breach one month after the attack brought the entire network down.

This is one of the reasons why PS3 online is free. They don't really need to take responsibilty, you ain't paying they don't give an ****.

Hopefully they listen when they get warned that their security isn't good.

If you ask me, I think they deserve something more severe. If they're trying to say they had no way to prevent it, I don't think they have any way of knowing if payment card details were accessible or not, So they shouldn't be acting like it wasn't possible for it to happen.

Efficient Well if it was preventable, why didn't they prevent it? lol

Because they didn't invest in a good security system.
