Leaker Teases New 3D Super Mario Game

4.5
A notable gaming industry leaker, Midori, has revealed the codename for a new project in the works at Nintendo, with it potentially being a brand-new 3D Super Mario game. Fans of the Super Mario franchise have had a lot to play throughout 2023 and 2024, between the release of spin-offs like Princess Peach: Showtime, remakes of beloved games like Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and the launch of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which has been lauded as one of the best 2D Super Mario games. Now fans may have a new 3D Mario game to look forward to, according to recent leaks from Midori.

Midori has provided fans with plenty of accurate and reliable leaks for games from Sega, including franchises like Persona, Sonic the Hedgehog, and more. Midori has also weighed in on some of Nintendo's potential projects, such as claiming Zelda: Breath of the Wild would be revisited on the Switch successor, leaking its potential codename. Now Midori has leaked the codename of a new Mario project.

In a recent Twitter thread on Midori's account, she claims a new project at Nintendo codenamed "SPRed" is in development at Nintendo, noting that past Mario games had used Red in its codename. This is supported by how various Super Mario games, both 3D and 2D, used a variation on the "red" codename. For example, Super Mario Odyssey was called RedStar and Super Mario Bros. Wonder was called SecRed. Midori notes that a project called SilverStar was in development at Nintendo, but it is unknown what has happened to it, other than its connection to RedStar and Odyssey.

Some fans began trying to piece together Midori's info, speculating that the unknown SilverStar project was likely a Super Mario Odyssey DLC or expansion, before its scope broadened out to become a sequel (similar to how Super Mario Galaxy 2's levels were meant for its predecessor). Bowser's Fury was then used as a test bed for a new direction modeled after Super Mario Odyssey, and from there, SilverStar was eventually back in development for the next Nintendo console, with it warranting a brand-new codename. Fans have also speculated the "SP" in the game's codename of SPRed could stand for "special."

With this information, it's not out of the realm of possibility that SPRed is the codename for a brand-new 3D Mario game, with it incorporating various aspects of past games to be a successor to Odyssey. That said, despite Midori's reliable track record and accurate leaks, this information should still be taken with a grain of salt for now, and fans should wait until Nintendo officially reveals this potential Mario project.
