Next-gen Xbox to lack backwards compatibility - report

The next-generation Xbox will not support backwards compatibility with Xbox 360 games, claims a new report.

Citing 'people with knowledge of the matter', Bloomberg says that the console's shift away from the Power PC architecture of the Xbox 360 to the new x86 platform will render the console incompatible with Xbox 360 software.
This comes as little surprise, especially considering the PS4 will lack backwards compatibility with PS3 games for much the same reason, although Sony has said it is "exploring" the possibility of making PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS Mobile games ubiquitous to any platform, including PS4, using Gaikai cloud streaming technology.

As has been previously suggested, Bloomberg reports that the new Xbox will be powered by processors from AMD - who will also provide innards for Sony's PlayStation 4 - with a powerful 'system-on-a-chip' solution that combines the CPU and GPU on a single chip codenamed 'Jaguar'.

Bloomberg also backs up reports from earlier today that Microsoft had planned to unveil the console in April but has pushed back its plans to a possible May event.

The report suggests that an E3 reveal is also under consideration.

The Verge today reported that Microsoft's big reveal will come at an event on May 21, corroborating with a report from US reporter Paul Thurrott, who is well known in technology circles for his Microsoft leaks.

I don't see the point of eliminating backwards compatibility.

-LOST- I don't really think it's a big deal since people usually play current games not games from an old console with outdated graphics.


Actually alot of people still play retro games with outdated graphics(your words not mine) such as the NES SNES 2600 PS1 and so on simply because they are good games. Those people are true gamers and the rest that only care about the most popular games and newest graphics are fanboys/girls and not gamers.




Treyarched is right i still play the N64, dreamcast and mega drive as the games are so more fun than the crap you get on new consoles..

Have you not tried a games such as Crysis 3, Battlefield 3, Far Cry 3, Halo 4, Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, Batman Arkham Asylum, or any other modern game? Obviously you have, since you are on this website. They are 100% if not >100% better than games on a dreamcast or n64. Chances are you don't even OWN those consoles anymore, simply because they are stale and garbage. Real gamers keep up to date, with good games that have a great storyline, not some 8 bit games

I am not a "Gamer", but i will say that you cannot say n64 games are worse then new games. I still play Mario Party 2 and 3 all the time (obviously not by myself) and I do think they are more fun then plenty of new games. Not to mention I prefer halo 3 over halo 4 any day.


Wow! N64 is crap? really? Mario 64,Goldeneye,Ocarina of Time,Majora's Mask,Blast Corps? I can honestly say i haven't played a game as good as any of those recently on any modern console and yes i still have an N64 and quite a few other retro consoles and they are still great,i doubt i'll be saying that about XBOX in 20 - 25 years time,you'll be lucky to find one still working even :)

Favorite game of all time: Super Mario 64. Can't compare it's originality and awesome gametime

There is only one game listed up there that is actually good. Let me give you a hint. It came out this year and starts with a B. Yeah..but not, old console games are fun as hell. You're telling me you rather play a repetitive game over a game that was actually fun to play? I can tell you, I can play games through like windwaker more that all but one of those games combined.

So basically what you're saying is real gamers only care about whats new and everything else is crap? Yeah new games are fun(well the good ones anyway) but so are the older ones if you cant appreciate games you once liked anymore just because they are old then you are not a true gamer.
