Rumor: Nintendo Switch Online Could Be Adding an Unexpected Feature

According to backend evidence from a source, the Nintendo Switch Online SNES app may soon support the forgotten SNES Mouse peripheral for a handful of compatible titles. The source also claimed that the September 17 Nintendo Switch Online SNES app update expanded how SNES Mouse support could be utilized.

Originally released in 1992, the SNES Mouse was a two-button mouse bundled with a gray, plastic mouse pad and the artsy game Mario Paint. The SNES Mouse's colors matched the SNES itself, as it was light gray with two purple buttons and a black connecting cable. The SNES Mouse used the first controller slot of the SNES console for most games. Because it used the SNES' proprietary connector, the SNES Mouse was incompatible with PCs. While it was available, the SNES Mouse was also sold separately for under $30. Since then, third-party companies have remade the SNES Mouse under different names, such as Hyperkin's Hyper Click Retro-Style Mouse.

Though all rumors must be taken with a fine pinch of salt, the SNES Mouse may soon return to the spotlight. A Tumblr post by a dataminer named LuigiBlood (via VGC) stated that Nintendo secretly reworked SNES Mouse functionality that had been part of the experience from the launch of the SNES app for Nintendo Switch Online. LuigiBlood said the September 17 SNES app update, which included games like Battletoads/Double Dragon, was when the changes were made. The emulation of the SNES Mouse was retooled to read either controller port rather than just the first, and code was discovered that could be used to configure the SNES Mouse's behavior to be either closer to its original release or to something else entirely.

The September 17 SNES app update reworked SNES Mouse functionality.
SNES Mouse compatibility has been part of the Switch Online SNES app since its launch.
The SNES Mouse was originally launched in 1992 along with Mario Paint.
No SNES Mouse games on the Switch Online service are available yet.

In short, the changes could mean that SNES Mouse support beyond just using a USB mouse may be in the works at Nintendo. Whether this means Nintendo plans to launch titles on the SNES app that once used the SNES Mouse, such as Mario Paint or Mario and Wario, remains to be seen. While most SNES titles that included SNES Mouse compatibility remained exclusive to Japan, the SNES app for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers is a popular way for titles from classic series such as Kunio-Kun to come to the West.

Given that the SNES remains one of Nintendo's most popular consoles, any attempts to add more titles to the Switch Online service would be a likely hit with fans. It remains to be seen if games like Mario Paint will be added to the app in future updates.
