Sony's Porting PS2 Horror Siren to Its New PS5, PS4 Emulator

4.6
Sony is adding Siren to PS Plus Premium from 15th October, which is potentially huge news. This is because the PS2 survival horror is actually already part of the subscription, as it was ported to the PS4 in 2016. The Japanese giant pulled the plug on its ill-fated PS2 on PS4 programme after fans complained of shoddy emulation and a lack of features, but this proves it’s willing to re-release games in its new emulator.

Why is this significant? Because it means titles like Twisted Metal Black, Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, and crucially Ape Escape 2 – which is currently broken in PS5 backwards compatibility – could eventually be re-released in the new emulator as well.

The new emulator – while far from perfect – is superior to its predecessor because it performs better, has rewind functionality and save states, and allows you to toggle between PAL and NTSC releases. In some instances in the past, like with Ape Escape 2, the platform holder only ported the European game code, which runs at a slower 50Hz compared to its American alternative.

While we’re eager to see new retro games added to Sony’s ecosystem, it’d be great to see all of these old ports updated eventually as well. Our only concern is that the Japanese giant’s generally only adding two to three titles per month, which means it’s going to take years to amass a decent library of classic content at this pace.
