Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered Isn't Doing Very Well on PS5

4.2
A recently published report indicates that Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered is one of the least popular PlayStation 5 console exclusives released in 2024. Although Sony is offering a $10 upgrade path to Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered from the base game, it seems a lot of PS5 players are simply not interested in it.

Horizon Zero Dawn first launched on the PS4 in 2017 and eventually made its way to PC three years later. After the PS5's launch in late 2020, developer Guerrilla Games even patched Horizon Zero Dawn to run at 60fps instead of 30fps when running via backwards compatibility on the current-gen machine. Many PS5 players felt this upgrade was sufficient for a smooth gameplay experience, but Sony clearly reckoned it could do more with Horizon Zero Dawn. Just last month, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered was launched for PS5 and PC.

Although Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered features several changes over the original, many PlayStation fans expressed doubt over a 2017 game needing a remaster. It seems this skepticism has translated to an underwhelming reception for Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered on PS5, as per a recent report from TrueTrophies. Collating gameplay data from 3.5 million PSN accounts, the report found that Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered ranks 10th in terms of weekly player count in the 13-strong list of PS5 console exclusives launched this year.

Interestingly, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered reigns supreme on TrueTrophies' list of the most played PS5 console exclusives of 2024, beating out heavy hitters like Black Myth: Wukong and Helldivers 2. Compared to the Naughty Dog remaster, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered saw 91.8% fewer PS5 players in its launch week. During the same week, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered also failed to crack the list of the top 40 most popular PS5 and PS4 games. Sony has yet to comment on the remaster's commercial performance, but one can imagine the platform holder may not be very happy about it.

However, it's worth mentioning that TrueTrophies' sample size of 3.5 million PSN accounts is quite miniscule compared to the 116 million monthly active users on PlayStation platforms, so this data shouldn't be taken as absolute proof that Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered flopped on PS5. With the original Horizon Zero Dawn outperforming the remaster on PC, though, there isn't much to suggest that it's a huge success either.
