No, this is not a drill. Yes, it took them over a decade. But hey, at least they did it!

After taking so long that most fans considered the idea just to be another loose thread that would never be tied, Ubisoft surprised everyone by adding Steam achievements to Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag.

The good Ubisoft pirate game (the less said about the other one, the better) is not the only title to get some unexpected love: you can now also chase that sweet 100% completion high in the streets of Paris with Assassin's Creed Unity.

Despite their age, these Assassin's Creed games aged much better than some more recent entries.

On Steam, both the recent and all-time reviews for Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag are very positive, with a total positive rating of 88%.

Although Assassin's Creed Unityfalls behind a little bit, it still sports fairly respectable numbers, scoring mostly positive (78%) ratings on both fields.

A look at the achievements page raises some questions about how much of this surprise update was thought through.

Some (albeit very few) of the achievements ported wholesale from the game's release refer to multiplayer action.

Recently, Ubisoft has displayed a nasty habit of pulling the plug on servers after games have been around for a little while (or no time at all, in the unfortunate case of XDefiant).

This practice is not exclusive to Ubisoft, as demonstrated by EA nuking the online presence of Battlefield 3, 4, and Hardline, despite all games still having a solid player base.

So far there is no indication about how long Assassin's Creed Black Flag and Unity have until the servers go down, and whether the achievements set will eventually change if the game moves to an offline-only life.

This uncertainty is a strong signal for aspiring Assassin's Creed completionists to get a move on and tick the online challenges right off the bat while things are still up and running.

As with many games that have crossed that decade milestone, it is hard to find other players to roll with.

The best solution so far has been to find a friend and coordinate to play it, especially since both games are available on Steam with hefty discounts.
