Microsoft preparing response to Xbox One DRM concerns

4.3
Larry Hryb, director of programming for Xbox Live, recently stated that Microsoft is listening to negative feedback on Xbox One's digital rights management issues, and now it appears responses to those concerns will soon be provided.

Responding to a Twitter user, Hryb said he will provide answers for DRM concerns and reiterated that Microsoft is listening to consumer feedback and that he is working on a response to address concerns. Hryb didn't say, however, if consumer feedback would have any impact on Microsoft's plans for the recently announced console.

Microsoft hasn't been clear on the exact DRM restrictions imposed by its upcoming console, causing confusion about how often it has to be connected to the Internet to work. Additionally, the company has said it's working on a feature "to enable customers to trade in and resell games," though it won't reveal how that method works until later.

Users of the gaming website NeoGAF recently started a campaign to bombard Microsoft and Sony with feedback on DRM issues such as persistent Internet connections requirements and similar issues, prompting Hryb's statements that Microsoft is listening to feedback. Microsoft had been expected to address DRM concerns at its E3 press conference on June 10, though the backlash may have sped up those plans.

Liquidvlade Here is my opinion on this ordeal.

Consoles are not a handheld they are 95% of the time to remain at your place unless you travel (and you should be enjoying your vacation anyway, not playing) and if you're in school campus, you'll have internet.

I much rather install the game, not have to use a disc and use the internet to authenticate, I don't let people borrow games because they either don't take care of them or I don't get them back and on top of that why would I pay 60-70$ to let someone else play for free.

Sony can go two ways, either install the games using the disc to authenticate (which would keep people happy in a way) or do the same thing Microsoft is doing. I PERSONALLY (Opinion mmk?) prefer Microsoft's method. I prefer installing the game and swapping games without using a disc, makes it a little more convenient.

All these "Sony fanboys" bash Microsoft to no end. Well, Sony has NOT said anything about DRM, game installs, hard drive sizes and has not shown the console. What is Sony decides to screw up all of those? Don't say "they won't" until E3.

Microsoft has been listening as well and they are pretty good about fixing what people don't like.

DISCLAIMER: Once again, this is all my opinion, you can have yours as well.

My console is not connected to the internet. So clearly it's not always available. D e r p. Also, that's you, you're willing to blow too much money on a mediocre at best game in which you'll end up spending even more on in DLC.. I don't like a lot of the things they've revealed about the console so far. I'm not too interested in the PS4 either, though it's looking to be pretty good with it's advancements. I don't want to switch to PS simply because of the tenure i've had on xbox. Though the PS looks better, i'll probably end up with an Xbox. If I didn't know that all my money spent on DLC, games, and etc. on the 360 was going to complete waste, I'd for sure buy Xbox One. Knowing that it's actually debatable for me.

I don't see why you couldn't unless you didn't have internet available at your place now a days. I've been living in the US for 12 years and I've had internet issues that lasted more than 24 hours (1 time). It has gone out other times but usually no more than a hour or so. But you're right, there is always that exception that prevents people from getting their console online.

Sony spoiled us back in the day with BC, it was cool at first because while the good games are out you could go ahead and enjoy your older ones, but I always saw it as a bonus. If it was there, cool, if it wasn't then tough luck. Old school consoles didn't have BC and we all used to be happy. I still have my PSX w/GameShark and the PS3 (BC model) to play old games. I occasionally fire up my original Xbox and I plan on keeping my Xbox 360 for sure. Even if I wanted to sell it, resale value on these units suck, not worth it.

-LOST- I'm sure a lot of this will be cleared up at E3.

I would sure hope so, it's a mess. Everyone is arguing.

Completely agree. Plus downloading the game makes it run faster and smoother. Don't have to worry about scratches or anything. Internet is not a problem for me. I understand why people get mad about it but I suggest waiting until all the facts are on the table for both consoles before ranting on the internet about how you hate something when you don't even know how it fully works yet. Just makes people look ignorant.

skathe665 They shouldn't be preparing an answer. They should already have one. This is ridiculous. They're PR is a f*cking joke. Someone needs to get fired.

It hasn't been that long. Also they don't have to tell us anything. They can just wait until E3 to release all the info. Plus they have to figure out the perfect response so raging kids like you won't flip out due to they didn't get exactly what they want.

What? How is a waste if you played them? Do you mean that you're mad because you won't be able to play it on the one? Think we have established that you can just keep your 360 if that's the case.
