Wii U Basic model 'withdrawn' from GameStop outlets - report

4.4
Nintendo is withdrawing its basic 8GB Wii U model from GameStop retail outlets, according to a report.

According to a Kotaku source, GameStop has issued a memo to its retail outlets requesting Wii U Basic consoles be returned to the retailer's distribution center by June 18.
"All stores will need to return all/new unopened Wii U Basic," the memo reads. "Stores that have 10 or more in stock will receive shipping cartons from the DC [distribution center]... All other stores will need to save shipping cartons for this recall."

Both Nintendo and GameStop have declined to comment on the matter, though the move points to a potential phasing out of the 8GB model - at least in the North American market.

Nintendo fell short of its annual net profit target for 2012 by 50 per cent, following poorer than expected Wii U and 3DS sales.

The recall roughly coincides with Nintendo's next Direct broadcast, which coincides with E3 2013. Nintendo is expected to detail Smash Bros, a 3D Mario game and Mario Kart for Wii U.

According to CVG sources, Nintendo is planning a huge push for the Wii U in the second half of 2013 in order to make good on the console's rocky launch.

Since the Wii U's launch in late 2012, the 32GB Wii U Deluxe model has performed consistently better at retail compared with its Basic counterpart.

Katsumi Nintendo really messed up on this one. They still have the 3DS which is currently dominating the portable market though

Pokemon X and Pokemon Y will only increase those sales as well.

The Wii U was a failure by Nintendo. They lost a lot of money on this console.

Brigand Looks like Nintendo lost more money.

Console wise yes they have, but I'm sure they are still doing good in sales when it comes to games and E3 will only help boost that after what they showed.

Why not keep the crappy model and take out the good model? Save money

Liquidvlade Wii U itself it's actually a pretty decent console, the problem why nobody wants to buy it right now is because it has NO decent games. I guarantee that whenever Nintendo decides to release their heavy hitters (Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Mario (adventure game), StarFox, Donkey Kong, Pokemon) they will get back in track.

- Legend of Zelda - go back to the dark Twilight Princess style with HD graphics and a kick ass storyline
- Super Smash Bros - give us a good campaign, the ability to get DLC, decent online and some great characters.
- Star Fox - go back to something with the roots of the N64, make it 4 players co-op, and some kick ass multiplayer
- Mario Kart - I thought Double Dash was genius, but gives us online multiplayer (team death karting, co-op, 16 people matches
- Pokmon - give us a deep, awesome RPG on the consoles with online multiplayer, (co-op) or at least battles)

^I'm pretty sure they do something remotely close to this, a lot of old school fans would give Nintendo another try.

I think that this is quite true and I believe that during E3 will be Nintendo's time to shine and show off some of these new games they have for the Wii U. I know that 3 of these games are already confirmed and we will have more news and some gameplay during E3.

You have pretty much summed it up to perfection. I haven't played Nintendo in a while but if I see them start making good games then I will buy a Wii U just to try them out.
