Multiple Wii online services discontinued today

As planned, Nintendo is today discontinuing several of the outgoing Wii's online services.


The discontinued services will render the following Wii home menu 'Channels' obsolete:

Nintendo Channel
News Channel
Forecast Channel
Everybody Votes Channel
Mii Contest Channel
Data exchange with Wii Friends

The Data Exchange with Friends closure will affect the "exchange of Wii messages on the Wii Message Board, exchange of Mii characters on the Mii Channel and message/data exchange within some games will be disabled".

This comes seven months after the launch of the Wii's successor, Wii U, in November 2012.

The Wii U Shop channel will remain online for the forceable future, and can be accessed directly via the Wii U system while in its backwards-compatible Wii mode.

Nintendo said within its original announcement, "We at Nintendo sincerely thank you for your continued patronage of our company's products. We apologise to those of you currently using these services."

No, not at all. Which kinda sucks because, I loved Nintendo when I was younger. The GameCube was the best. :D


This is why idiots shouldn't be allowed on the internet. Nintendo is actually doing pretty good, best selling hand-held systems, INCLUDING the Nintendo 3DS which everyone said was going to fail. The Wii U is picking up more and more on sales, and with more titles coming, it's going to out-sell the other consoles easily. Do your research before you talk you goofs.


If you payed attention, you would notice that earlier the console wasn't selling much. You're also ignoring that it can't handle new game engines which made it lose some game support. This is followed with the massive PS4/XB1 hype for this November. I'm highly doubting the Wii U will outsell either of the two consoles. Regardless when I can afford it, I will buy a Wii U after I get an XB1 for Super Smash Bros. 4 and Pikmin 3.

slapshot101 I don't see why they can't support things like the news and weather channels because they both don't require any work, they are taken from outside data.


I think its because they are not even used, kids mostly use the wii.
