Xbox One price 'less exorbitant after inflation calculation'

Microsoft's Xbox One may launch this November as one of the most expensive consoles ever, but if its $499 price is measured against other consoles with inflation factored in, the system's RRP is not the steepest.

Games site Ars Technica has listed most of the major games consoles released since the Atari 2600, and adjusted each system's RRP for inflation to bring all in line with 2013.

The results suggest that the Xbox One, in real terms, is $200 cheaper than the PS3, more than $100 cheaper than the Sega Saturn, and less than half the price of the 3DO and NeoGeo.

Ars Technica's chart also suggests that games consoles are generally launching at a cheaper price in real terms. The Panasonic 3DO remains the most expensive, at a 2013 price of £1127, though the NeoGeo is at a close second at £1111.

These figures only represent US launch prices, however. Microsoft is launching the Xbox One in the UK at £429 for the unit, which calculates to $652.

Sony's PlayStation 4 price holds a key advantage, selling at $399 in the US and £349 in the UK.

Microsoft has confirmed an Xbox One release date of November 2013. It will go head-to-head with the PS4 release which is currently officially 'holiday 2013'.

-Snowflake if they can make it cheaper than $500 maybe more people will buy it. I know lots of people are going to buy it regardless, but parents will buy their kids the cheaper console, making the next generation of gamers. I feel like $350 is a more reasonable price.

Well it comes with the Kinnect, so if you think about it, it's around $500 but it comes with a Kinnect, so easily knock off about $80-$100 there, Microsoft are also doing free games and great deals over the next few months, so I think it's about right. $350 Is reasonable, but seems like too little, i could easily buy the Xbox One twice in a month if i work overtime and more hours.

When the PS3 launched it cost $499, and no one blinked an eye at that price. People seem to forget that people were willing to bid up to $2000 on eBay for the PS3 after the stocks ran out. All of a sudden the Xbox one is too expensive, and when people start to realise how expensive a good gaming pc is, they win stop complaining and buy either the PS4 or Xbox

Nobody cares.

The UK price is because it includes VAT and I believe some other taxes. From my understanding the US price doesn't include taxes because every state has different tax rates.

even with VAT in which is the only major price changer it is still a good 40gbp overcharge. vat is only 20%
