Had Seamus Blackley and his hardware team not vetoed the anagram-based suggestions made by Microsoft's mad men, the original Xbox could have been called the Microsoft FACE – which stood for "Full Action Center" – according to a list of rejected names for Microsoft's debut console provided to Edge by Blackley.

Or, alternatively, the Microsoft O2 ("Optimal Ozone"), MEA ("Microsoft Entertainment Activator"), OM ("Odyssey of the Mind") or any other number of ridiculous things. Blackley said that, while "Xbox" was originally an internal shortening of "DirectX Box" used in email threads, it was the only contender to survive the four-stage naming process.

Out of the entire list, we think the most historically interesting option was Microsoft TSO, which meant "Three Six Zero." Sound familiar?

I don't even own a Playstation lol i'm just telling the truth Xbox is just as uncreative as Playstation i'm not saying either is crap so for you to just call the Playstation crap for no reason just shows how ridiculous you are.


i'm calling the PlayStation crap because i actually have one and in my opinion i think it is crap however as far as names are concerned "Xbox" is creative and PlayStation is like the name of an arcade in a pub. Xbox One is an all in one system, Microsoft actually have a reason for calling it that however playStation just bring out different versions with no creativity (PS 1,2,3 and 4). In the future you will have something like "Xbox Infinity" and "PlayStation 27823". Therefore Sir you are ridiculous for saying that people are "fanboys" of consoles and especially when you do not own a PS3 you can't really say it is better.

Yeah fanboys will be fanboys, as a person with an entirely unbiased view, PlayStation is a far better name that Xbox, how can anybody argue that Microsoft are better at naming consoles when they just created the Xbox One?


you can't moan about the Xbox "One" when it is in the exact same form as the PlayStation "4" Microsoft did not wan't to go for a boring crappy name like "PlayStation" instead they wanted to think of a name that stood out more and that was new so they named their console the "Xbox" which is a far better name than PlayStation. PlayStation is the exact same but with new versions (PlayStation 1,2,3 and 4) Microsoft actually like to have a name that stands out therefore the "Xbox One" the all in one system. This is also like saying oh Sony can't think of names as they named it the PlayStation "4".
