Xbox One: Microsoft details controller recognition, facial expressions

4.7
Microsoft held an Xbox One panel during Comic-Con today, featuring developer discussing some of the console’s new features such as smiling avatars and controllers recognizing their owners.

Major Nelson moderated the panel, which consisted of Microsoft creative director Ken Lobb, Turn 10′s Dan Greenwalt, Dead Rising 3′s Josh Bridge, Microsoft Studio’s Justin Robey, and Rare’s Nick Burton – according to IGN.

Lobb showed how he used Project Upload to record highlights from Killer Instinct at EVO, and showed how the Xbox One controllers recognize who is holding it through Kinect’s camera. When the controller is passed to another player, games will automatically load individual profiles for the player.

Greenawalt discussed the haptic and rumble motors inside the controller, and how the individual rumbles in the triggers can provide feedback on tire performance in games such as Forza 5. This should give players a better idea of how to pull off better grip and braking techniques.

Dead Rising 3′s Josh Bridge showed a slideshow of game features such as physics driven glass shards and atomically correct organs which are shown when you chop up a zombie.

Robey talked more about Microsoft’s Smartglass features, and how you can be playing Ryse, and invite others to join you in a Dead Rising match, and be notified in game when the others are ready.

Rare’s lead of new technology Nick Burton discussed how Kinect’s fidelity has improved and can now read the folds in your face and discern which finger is what at 3 meters.

Hand positions are read better as well, and he showed some tech which scanned his face; produced a mask of it and mapped it into a game. This will allow users to “import their own face geometry and BMI onto character models” in the games. It can now even track a player’s face and reproduce facial expressions on the in-game models.

Rare is currently working on a target shooting game which makes used of player hand and eye positions, instead of a light gun.

Xbox One is slated for a holiday season release and details on an exact release will be revealed “this summer”.

xSTaTiCBLuEx Oh God, this is going to go badly :/ I don't think we are at the stage where a 100+ camera is going to be able to consistently detect individual players, especially when clothes changes are involved (yes most people do change clothes). I believe I will pick up the controller and it will load, say my brothers profile and keep happening and will all not work out to be honest. After Microsofts current showcase, there is no hope or belief that it will go well :(

Do you ever say anything constructive on the Xbox news section? Just clicking a few of your recent activity on your profile reveals you spend the majority of your time bashing the company. Don't you think you'd be better suited at the playstation section, little boy?

On a more serious note; I think this is a good feature tbh. I do have those friends that will take any opportunity to change your settings just so they can get the upper hand for a few moments.
As for the facial expression, I'm not too sure about what it even means, but we'll see how it goes, hopefully it works out for the best.

Wake I'm excited to test out this feature and see how well it works

Hopefully Microsoft has managed to pull this off well. It will be a great addition to an already great console if it turns out to be good. The Xbox One seems to be just getting better

That's what I'm saying. Ever since they have started releasing details on the console it seems so much better.

Glad I went ahead and preordered it

YZF This Xbox one is going to be way over priced

I don't personally think that it's really overpriced for what you are paying for it, the hardware is pretty good and it is much more advanced than the current generation consoles.

Those saying the xboxone is going to be overpriced or is overpriced just wait until the price drops. Sure its alot 500 dollars. You gotta think its new. Not only that its been improved with a lot more features so of course its going to be a bit pricey. back on topic though. I find it neat how the kinect can recognize who is holding the controller. Though I dislike how the guide button is higher up on the controller. I perosonally like the 360 controllers how they are more so then the xbox one. Then again I havent used one yet so its up for debate
