PS4 and Xbox One to have different game memory allocations

4.6
The battle between Microsoft's Xbox One and Sony's PlayStation 4 in terms of their hardware and performance continues as a new report claims Sony's next-generation game console allows game developers to use up to 4.5 GB of its 8 GB of RAM. The other 3.5 GB is reserved for the PS4's operating system.

However, the report from Eurogamer, based on unnamed sources, also claims that Sony might let games access an additional amount of RAM, up to one more GB, in the PS4's memory pool under special circumstances. The article makes it clear that not all PS4 games will be allowed to access this extra amount of RAM.

The PS4's game memory usage compares well to Microsoft's Xbox One, which allocates 5 GB of its own 8 GB of RAM for game developers. The Eurogamer article claims that the Xbox One's RAM requirements are fixed and can't be changed, unlike the PS4.

As we have reported before, the 8 GB of RAM inside the PS4 is of the GDDR5 variety, clocking at 5500 MHz for 170.6 GB/s of bandwidth. This compares to 8 GB of the older DDR3 RAM for the Xbox One, with a clock speed of 2133 MHz for just 68.3 GB/s of bandwidth, along with 32 MB of eSRAM that is supposed to have 102 GB/s of embedded memory bandwidth. A recent rumor is claiming Microsoft might be able to increase the speed of that embedded memory to 192GB/s for the final retail version of the console.

Disorts People this is a rumor, and ram is not everything the graphics card is everything. More ram wont make good graphics. i own a gaming pc and a personal school cpu with 8gb of ram and a garbage graphics card i cannot play games, think before you speak.

Graphics don't matter though except in console exclusives. So what is the point of one having a better graphics card if it's going to get little use? And I don't play games because of their graphics, I play if they are fun.

Graphics cards are going to matter. It's pretty much defines next gen. Games that are fun can be expanded a whole lot more with a better graphics card.

I don't think you got what I meant. Either you didn't read or something. What I was saying is if one console has a better graphics card than the other then it will not be taken advantage of due to the games having to fit both consoles. Dev's are not going to spend extra time to boost the graphics for one console. I'm not saying don't upgrade graphics cards, I'm saying that upgrading past the other console is pretty much pointless except for console exclusives.

Or they will build for high end pc. Then dumb it down to fit the ps4 and the xbox. So the graphics the consoles produce does matter.

Why would they do that if it takes extra time? The graphics will still be equal on both consoles regardless of which one has a better graphics card. The one with the worst one will be deciding how the graphics look. Which means the graphics card on the better one doesn't matter... Which is what I said. I don't understand how this is complicated. For example look at cross platform games. CoD for example looks the same on PS3 and Xbox. Same for BF and many other's. It might look slightly better on the PC because that's where they design them but usually they don't because they are just going to have to reduce them for the consoles which takes more time and money. Battlefield is the only FPS that I know of that looks better on the PC. There are a couple of RPG's to but most of those look better because they release HD packs after the game has been released.

Dude if one console had a better graphics card, the games would look a whole lot different depending on how high end it is.

That's quite a bit of RAM for a console.

Does this actually matter?

It's worth paying for the updates ^^

Ted- Looks like alot more indie games will be developed on the XB1 because of it's potential

Yep, a lot more!

Did you even read the last paragraph!? The speed on which the ram loads, it balances out there, but PS4 would probably get more indie developers if Microsoft carry on charging their ridiculous prices for updates.

Microsoft said they are not going to charge a lot for updates..
