Destiny 'potentially a billion dollar franchise', says Activision boss

Bungie's first post-Halo game Destiny has the potential to become Activision's third billion dollar franchise.

That's according to Activision Publishing boss Eric Hirshberg, who says the persistent online shooter looks set to join Call of Duty and Skylanders as a billion dollar IP for the publisher.

"We strongly believe we are on pace to set the all-time pre-order record for a new IP," said an upbeat Hirshberg during an Activision Blizzard earnings call today.

"Based on what we've seen we believe that Destiny has the potential to become the third active billion dollar franchise in the Activision Publishing portfolio," he added.

Destiny is developer Bungie's first game since it parted ways with Microsoft and the Halo franchise it created, and partnered with Activision. Hirshberg, has said previously that the new shooter is "probably one of the biggest investments in a new IP that's ever been made in this industry".

The Destiny release date has been pencilled in for 'early 2014' on PS4, PS3, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

I loved halo 1-3 not a fan of reach, but if they return to there roots I will for sure get into destiny.

Well seeming that the Halo Franchise was of a very high quality when bungie was developing it i wont be surprised if destiny turns out to be a great game


I agree, I just hope that they don't pull a CoD and have a game released every year. I know the development is a 2 year cycle but I want a game when it's ready, not because the publisher needs it's annual money from the game. Like GTA V and Watch Dogs, they could have been released a long time ago but the release was delayed to make sure the game is at it's best and those will probably be contenders for game of the year.

Stick Bungie on any game and people will buy it. From the looks of it its like borderlands with no fun graphics or lack of humor

I have a feeling that this will be a very well selling game for a number of reasons.

1. It's made by Bungie, most people are going to trust it as a great title without seeing much gameplay.

2. Playstation gamers will be interested because they never had a chance to play Halo and will most likely assume this game is similar.

3. They are doing great marketing and an over all great job of showing what the game is capable of.

Can't wait to play Destiny though.

DLT It does look like a pretty good game. I can't see it outselling the Halo series though. Not for a long time anyway.


It will outsell but only because its available on both consoles
