There's room for Call of Duty and GTA, says Activision Publishing CEO
Grand Theft Auto 5 has a fair chance of knocking the FPS series off the top of the annual best-seller lists it so regularly dominates, but Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg has told CVG there's room for both Rockstar's game and Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Ghosts to succeed this year.
"Obviously, [GTA] is a hugely successful franchise, and I get asked about our big competitors every year," he said in a newly published interview.
"We're always up against iconic titles, and I know people like to tell a clash-of-the-titans story, but I feel there's lots of evidence that there's room for more than one successful game, and indeed more than one successful blockbuster. And if people only have money for a few games, I like our chances that Call of Duty will be one of them."
Asked if he believes Call of Duty can continue to grow as a franchise, Hirshberg said: "I certainly hope so. The fact that it's a console transition year adds complexity, and if you look historically at what happens during console transitions is there are short-term challenges followed by long-term opportunities.
"We've discussed that pretty openly, but that said I think the franchise has never been stronger. More people are playing Call of Duty now than ever before, and in terms of performance we're producing the best season of digital content we've ever had.
"These things point to key interest and momentum, but there are challenges and confusion in the marketplace with regards to whether people are going for current gen or next gen. I think the creative challenge we have with Call of Duty is to make a game the fans love and at the same time build a new game that's innovative."

The only reason COD sells a lot is because of it's social status. It's like the iPhone everyone buys it because it's the new iphone not because it's a great phone, same thing with CoD.

Let's get the facts here. Call of Duty has been the number one game since the release of Modern Warfare. It's not a "dead franchise" as some of you call it. Yes, there will come a time when Call of Duty will lose its seat on the gaming throne, but until then they will continue to dominate sales. GTA V and Battlefield have a golden opportunity to do that this year. Only time will tell. You can easily tell who the obvious fanboys are on here just by what they post. I love all three franchises (COD, BF, and GTA) and I have all those games in my library. All of them have their flaws so neither game is perfect. Call of Duty's run will stop, maybe this year or in the near future. Only time will tell. Don't hate on the games that obviously sell and are better then the games you may like. Everyone has their own opinion on what game they think is the best but when it comes down to facts, Call of Duty is number one (for now) and will stay that way until someone dethrones them. Battlefield and GTA V look promising this year and both EA and Rockstar have the potential to do better than Call of Duty. If you must know, I have all three games pre-ordered and I'm looking forward to playing them. May the better game win.

Im buying GTA V on the 17th, and you will never see a call of duty game in my library ever again. Don't get me wrong I loved playing COD back when mw2 and BO1 were in, but COD is no longer interesting to me anymore. Just my opinion, no hate.
