Sony abandoned plans to bundle Eye camera with PS4 to keep price down

Sony attempted to include the PlayStation 4 Eye camera peripheral with the console at launch but dropped its plans after costs proved prohibitive, Sony Computer Entertainment president and Group CEO Andrew House revealed this week.

SCE Japan senior vice president Masayasu Ito notes that the company was determined to reach a $399 price point for the PlayStation 4 at launch, putting it $100 under the Kinect-bundled Xbox One. At the same time, Sony executives wanted to minimize loss on each console sold, driving the company's decision to release the PS4 Eye separately at $59.99.

House downplayed the Eye's importance to PlayStation 4 buyers at launch. "Certainly for the earlier part of the lifecycle, the vast majority of the audience that we speak to tells us that their primary wish is for the full controller interface and there's not necessarily a huge emphasis being placed on camera interaction," he said.

House hinted at plans to "adjust messaging" regarding the peripheral over the PlayStation 4's lifespan, suggesting that the PlayStation Eye could be included with future PS4 bundles.

JacobyEllsbury I really think they should do a Vita Bundle! I'd love to be able to play MLB The Show on both of them, playing on the same save no matter where I am.


I'm 90% sure they did and it got sold out, either that or they announced they were doing one. It was 500$ top.

I may be wrong but I want to say they announced that it wouldn't be till 2014, If this was a launch option I would of jumped on it. I'm also a little disappointed that we wont be able to buy the red and blue controllers right away.

I guess I'll have to make due with two black ones lol

ZENU96 They better not include the eye in. I just don't see myself using it when the PS4 comes out.


That's for sure, I'd pay $100 extra if they added a vita though :p


Have you ever had a vita? I liked mine it was pretty fun until i traded it in like a moron. i might buy one again


I have only messed around with them but with the being able to continue off from your ps4 to the vita looks amazing


I agree if they bundled the Vita in with the PS4 I would definatley be buying it. I have only had a chance to play the Vita for a short period of time and it was awesome.


I really could care less about the vita only games I'm excited about the cross console chat and being able to play off the same save in games on the vita

The vita only games were awesome! I loved silent hill book of memories


I haven't played too many of em but still i think it will be epic to play the same game on two consoles
