Wii discontinued in Europe, Nintendo confirms

Although the original announcement only applied to Japan, Nintendo UK has confirmed that the Wii has also been discontinued in Europe.


“Wii imports to Europe have been discontinued,” a representative told MCV.

“However, there are still a variety of options for consumers to enjoy Wii games and the Wii gameplay experience. Wii U, which is Nintendo’s latest home console, is backwards compatible with nearly all existing Wii games and accessories when you switch to Wii Mode on Wii U.”

Additionally, the Wii Mini will continue to be stocked in Europe, and if worse comes to worst you can always purchase on in the US, where the console has yet to be discontinued.

Every time a console is surpassed by the next generation, the manufacturer always says 'yeah there's at least another five years left in this we'll support it for this long' and then (as is the case here) twelve months elapse and they stop making them. Can't see that the Wii Mini will have much life left in it either - the Wii generally is a ship that's already sailed and has finished its nautical career. Which is why should have broken off from the Wii name for the Wii U but that's another argument!

Notice that throughout the past few years everyone has been split over the PS3 and Xbox 360 yet most people had a Wii regardless?

A lot of people liked the Wii.

I don't think they failed with it. Of course the first type of console like this isn't going to be the greatest. I mean look at Kinect (huge 360 fan btw), people may say they could've made it way better, but it was the first of its kind so it's going to have some flaws. IMO the first Kinect wasn't the greatest but an amazing idea. Off topic, I cannot wait for Kinect 2.0... even though I won't be using it too much

There are various other high quality games for the Wii such as Monster Hunter Tri and The Last Story.

and pokemon if im not mistaken they had emulators for it


Due to the backwards compatibility with Game-Cube games there where also excellent pokemon games available such as Pokemon Colosseum and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness
