Xbox One hard drive becomes full at 362 GB

4.8
When Microsoft launched the Xbox One in November, it did so without a way for their owners to find out how much free space was left on their 500 GB hard drive. At the time, Microsoft said that storage management was "automatic", adding, "By being smart about how storage is managed, Xbox One keeps everyone playing, watching, and sharing their entertainment content rather than worry about limitations."

Well, as it turns out it is possible to max out the available storage on an Xbox One if you install enough games and apps on its hard drive. IGN posted up a video that shows the maximum amount of available space on the drive for users is about 362 GB or so.

That limit was reached after installing 20 of the Xbox One's 23 launch titles. In a statement sent to IGN, Microsoft said the rest of the 500 GB space is used for the OS and the first party apps that are already available on the console.

While most people won't be buying and installing all of the Xbox One's launch games, the hard drive space issue will become a problem down the road as more and more games for the console are released. Microsoft has promised that it will update the console to accept external hard drives but so far there's no word on when that will be released.

Kurumu This worries me as I could see me filling this up within the next year. I just hope Microsoft comes out with a patch that allows us to use our external HD.

They will in the future, but you most likely will have to buy a HD made by Microsoft.

TX_F1ERCE_TX I have a 250GB that I've been having sense the xbox 360 came out, and I haven't even used up much of its space. still have 126 GB left.

360 games are on average 30-45% smaller than a xbone title. :-)

Rocky5 Ok let's clear some things up.

There are 5 partitions on the HDD.
1 for the system, 1 for the game contents, 1 for misc stuff ie recordings & such & 2 for updates.

It's also actually 400gb for the content partition but there maybe a system check so updates & DLC can be installed. So it keeps 40gb free for the latter.

Also the system will remove the least played game to free up space so you can install more games. (Removes a game when installing a new one)

So its a no fuss system, users need not worry about space or what game is being uninstalled.

I like the last part, I didn't actually know that. It'll cut me a lot of time when I'm trying to decide what game to delete.

148GB is a lot of data for the OS and some of the first party apps . I mean on the 360 the OS and necessary files only accounted for about 15GB of space. If they require you to download most games to play them then what happens to all the people that bought all the launch titles?

Bend Yeah you have no clue what you are talking about. you cannot put a solid state drive into a ps4. Get out silly fanboy

Well actually you can, aslong as it its 9.5mm then they system will accept it. (After you format & install the update from USB)

Anyhow here is more info for everyone's reading pleasure. (Show what the rest of the space is used for)
