Activision threatens subscription fees for Call of Duty

3.9
In a recent conference call with investors, Activision Blizzard revealed a new Call of Duty, announced that a subscription for the series is in the works, and hinted that they might not release as many big, plastic peripherals this year.

According to Ars Technica, Call of Duty 7 will renew Activision Blizzard's annual assault on holiday sales charts in 2010. This isn't a huge surprise - the company has released a new Call of Duty game every single year for the past five years. However, they've never released a Call of Duty with a subscription plan, and that may change soon. During the conference call, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said, "If you think about the success we've had in other product categories on subscription, you can get a sense of the direction that we want to take that franchise."

That's right, Activision Blizzard is pondering a Calling Plan of Duty, though you probably won't see one in this year's game. That's because it's in development at traditionally conservative Treyarch Studios, not Infinity Ward, which made last year's best-selling game. Furthermore, Destructoid quotes a source which claims that Infinity Ward is hard at work on a Call of Duty massively-multiplayer online game, which certainly fits the profile of a subscription-based title.

uh hell no, i pay 60$ for some non dedicated servers, mediocre campaign, god damn spec ops + 60$ a year for live? If they think for a minute that anyone would pay for this, they are idiots. Treyarch can at least build off that mind boggling nazi zombie plot and make an mmo about that. Infinty Ward and activison f*** you if you actually go through with this.

now that COD is doing this bttlefield is going to be dominant and so will the GOW,Halo series

TTG_JAYKAYPosted:

if this does happen this will be unfair for xbox users considering we already pay for online

Wow they want us to buy the game which is 60 bucks and Xbox want's us to pay for Xbox live and now they want us to pay more money to play the game. I think there just gonna loose money more then there gonna make most people will not pay to play a game other then buy the game, and some people can barley afford Xbox live and buying games...COME ON IW

MooseBehemothPosted:

I already pay 60 minimum for the game, and a shit load for Live. I'm. Not. Paying. To. Play. CoD.

If IW only wants hardcore gamers to play that that's what a subscription will do. CoD and Halo are the biggiest games on the 360 and Halo will make itself dominant if there's a subscription for CoD. This is a very stupid idea.

After how bad MW2 turned out, i honestly think it's cheek considering to charge people who pay £45 for the game and an extra £40 a year to MS, so we can play online. I am not forking out more money. I.W can go ***** themselves. Ill stay with Battlefield and Halo.

Why would you make us pay extra. WTF are you guys thinking. Nobody will be playing that GAY game. online would suck with nobody on the game. MW2 gets old after awhile but i rather play that then pay extra for a game i already bought You Greedy Basterds

The only reason why blizzard wants to invest is because there loosing money for there biggest hit World of Warcraft and they're are not devoted players anymore so to make money COD will be a subscription kind of game.
