Sony announces PlayStation 4 sales reached 4.2 million by end of 2013

Sony announced it's sold 4.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles worldwide as of December 28, 2013. Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House revealed the figure, which is estimated by SCEI, at his company's keynote at the CES trade show. The PS4 data was once again stipulated as "sell-through," meaning it represents units sold to consumers.

It's a dramatic doubling of the figure from December 1, 2013, meaning the company sold another 2.1 million units across the next 27 days of the month. In addition, the company estimates PS4 software sales through retail and digital channels are up to 9.7 million worldwide, while PS Plus subscriptions increased by more than 90 percent between the PS4 launch in North America and the end of the year - it's worth noting the PS4 comes with at least a 30-day Plus subscription in some regions, including the US and Canada.

Just ahead of the PS4's launch in North America, SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton projected 3 million worldwide sales by the end of the year. We now know the console beat that figure by some way, and the company's next aim of 5 million sales by the end of March looks a cert, given the PS4 is still to launch in Japan next month - the system is currently available in 53 markets worldwide.

The news comes the day after Microsoft announced Xbox One sales passed the 3 million mark by the close of 2013 across 13 markets worldwide.

Jayden- That's crazy. I just finished commenting on the "Xbox sells 3M consoles by end of 2013".
Now here is the PS4, selling 1.2 Million more copies than the Xbox One.

I honestly thought Xbox One would be superior and sell more. Obviously not!


Keep in mind that the consoles have not even been out for half a year now. The sales numbers can easily tip in the Xbox Ones favor over the coming months

I'm an Xbox fan, but to be honest I think the PS4 will have more overall sales. It has a lot more benefits and great features out at the moment than the 360, hopefully Microsoft learns from Sony and creates similar perks for their console.

Only sold more because it was released before xbone and is available in way more countries. That's the only reason. Really isn't that impressive if you compare using those facts.

i went into walmart and took a picture of the gaming section there were 5 bones and 0 PS4s LOL

The stupidity with all of the PS fanboy comments makes me laugh........ I plan on getting the PS4 later down the road but I'm very happy with my purchase of my xbox one! And of course your going to start seeing Xbox ones back in stock : / it's being sold in 40 less markets, therefore they are able to keep up with the demand and beyond that!
Plus seriously think about this guys if the xbox one achieved 3 Million consoles in only 13 markets compared to playstation 4 with 4.2 million consoles in 53 Markets I'd say they are about even with sales figuratively.


The reason for seeing Xbox ones on the shelves in stores while you see ) ps4's is quiet easily explained, but sadly is hard to accept by many playstation fans. Microsoft has a far larger production capability allowing them to not only meet supply and demand(which sony tried, and failed. But they did apologize for that) but to also keep extra consoles in stores so no one would have to go through the hassle of waiting an extra month to get their console. If your recall they even stated That their were able to produce enough to guarentee enough stocks that if you didn't pre order, you could still walk in day one of release and be able to buy an xbox one with a pre - order almost any were. So simply microsoft made a promise of stores having stock of their prouducts on release and after and they kept it. Sony tried but couldn't. But i cant under stat why any of you couldn't see this. Microsoft has a stronger production factor than sony does. But the xbox one still sold 3 million in 13 countries from Nov 22 - December 31th, and the ps4 sold 4.2 million November 15th - December 31th in 53 countires. Thats good for both companies. Their both selling wonderfully. But if both consoles were both released at the same time in the same countries it would be closer. But rest assured after this statement i shall be Called a Microsoft Fanboy. Even though im stating the truth and not some retarted fanboy logic.

More is more, but if the Xbox One was sold in as many areas it would be crushing the PS4. 3 Million divided by 13 is about 271,000.
4.2 Million divided by 53 is about 79,000. That shows that the Xbox One is selling over 3 times the amount of the PS4 for the countries that its in. You cannot dispute the math.


You seem to forget that the PS4 didn't launch in other countries until Nov 29th. while Microsoft launched in 10 on day one. Fact of the matter is that all these articles have been saying the PS4 is outselling xbox 2:1 your math is correct but the way you did it is wrong you didn't take into account the time spand in which sony launch. PS4 is selling more accept it or be delusional i own both so i don't care.

You all forget the fact that the PS4 launched in only 3 countries (north America) at first and sold 1 million.
The XB1 launched in 13 and sold 1 million. So it too the XB1 10 more countries to match it, and North America is traditionally one of Sony's weakest markets. Cant dispute math and sales history.
I cant dispute math if there is no math!
