PS Now: Sony recommends 5Mbps connection

Sony promises "low latency, high-quality gaming experience" with this bandwidth

Sony has stated its recommendation of a 5Mbps internet connection for use with its newly-announced PlayStation Now cloud gaming service.

Revealed at CES on Tuesday, PlayStation Now will stream PS3 games initially (other platforms to follow) to PlayStation devices, Sony Bravia TVs and, in future, other Sony and non-Sony devices.

In response to questioning regarding bandwidth, a Sony has said it recommends users have a 5Mbps connection.

"In our internal tests, users with this bandwidth or greater have been enjoying a low latency, high-quality gaming experience," said the firm.

"PS Now tests your connection of each game and optimizes for quality if you are above the minimum requirements," it added, as we revealed in our PlayStation Now hands-on preview.

"We strive to make the gameplay experience feel as if the game is being played locally on their device - fast and responsive (including for FPS and games with twitch mechanics)," Sony went on.

"The Closed Beta will definitely provide a great opportunity to test the experience with gamers with varying connection speeds and our developers will, of course, be working diligently to optimize the service based upon the feedback we receive from the community."

The closed beta is scheduled to begin later this month. Sony has said nothing of beta applications or the scale of the test.

I assume you mean 5MB/s. Mb stands for mega-bits which is only 1 eighth of a mega-byte. So 5Mb/s is only 0.625MB/s which if you have internet, it is highly unlikely for you to have a slower speed than this.

That's not much to ask for really

5Mbps isn't really much to ask for anyway

-CP It is astonishing that anyone who would purchase this console would not already have it....

Some countries are yet to have that sort of internet speed, mine is only 8m/b per second, and even that is one of the fastest out of all the people i know IRL. Australia are supposed to get the National broadband network (NBN) nationwide but it is yet to happen -_-

Australians What people need to know is not everyone's internet has a plutonium block wedged in their modem. My connection is only 8m/bs, and if i compare that to my friends, I always have the highest internet speed.

I live in Australia and am sitting here on 200kb/s, hopefully i can upgrade soon so i can access this feature though

Wow! Do you live in WA? I heard the internet is faster in the other states, S.A and so on. I just want NBN already ;( They promised us that ages ago, god damn Julia Gillard

I currently live in NSW. The bad thing with my area is that while the 2 suburbs around me are getting NBN soon my suburb is not getting it for another 5 years -_-

I dont know what I would prefer tho. At the end of the day we have to decide, Asylum Seekers stop, or NBN is available everywhere lol

well in other terms, 625KB/s is slow compared to what i have. Thought it would be much higher than this.
