PS4 vs Xbox One: console specs are “fairly marginal,” says Microsoft

Xbox One and PlayStation 4 specs only have a marginal difference, according to a Microsoft Australasia executive.

It comes from Gameplanet’s interview with Microsoft’s Australasian vice president of retail sales & marketing Alan Bowman.

While reflecting on the differences offered by Xbox One, Bowman explained, “We’ve got a unique value proposition, and from just a pure specs perspective it’s always gonna be a fairly marginal difference. The purists are gonna argue the toss, but I think it comes down to the games.”

He added, “You’re gonna see great exclusive games on Xbox One, and when you look at the cross-platform games, and there’s gonna be exclusive content on Xbox One. We’d like to be in more markets – this is a global business – but it’s also a long-term business, and we’ll progressively launch in more markets over the coming year.”

Bowman also commented on Xbox One in Japan, and he wasn’t as positive. Last year I interviewed a pair of Japanese indies on how the Xbox brand is perceived in Japan, and the feedback wasn’t good.

“That has been an ongoing challenge,” he concluded. “Being a local brand makes such a huge difference in Japan. Sony are so strong in Japan as its their home base, and they certainly get a lot of support from the customer as well as the ecosystem – the local third-party developers, who primarily publish for Sony.

“We had moments midway through the life of the 360 where we’d see a sales spike if we had Japanese developer content released. Japan is very [local] content-driven. Same applies for Korea, same applies to Taiwan. Most of north Asia is very content-driven.”

I really dont care for the specs, just give me games. And the games that Microsoft puts out are better in my opinion.

Craigyy Well the PS4 supports more games in 180p, so that's always in my mind when choosing one. And since that is a massive factor. The PS4 is the way I'd sway.

I think you mean 1080p. Anyways it isn't that big of a difference. The Xbox One runs at 900p which upscales to 1080p. Yes there is a minor difference when looking at the two consoles simultaneously but it's a very small difference.


Yeah, the quality isn't the heart of the console, there are many other factors to the PS4 and the Xbox One which are magnificent as well as disappointing. At the end of the day it's someones opinion.

@Lia The One can run at 1080p just like the PS4 can. Activision and/or IW decided to make it 900p on the One but the One just upscaled it to 1080p. There is barely a difference anyway


The One cannot run at 1080p Native. It is 720p Upscaled to 1080p.

It's not noticeable unless you're a PC gamer, everything must be 1080p native.


Actually the one Can run games at 1080p native because it ran several 7+ Launch games at 1080p Native. If you didn't know sony has a policy about their titles running 1080p which is why it runs most games at 1080p but a MS announcement a few months back that was quickly silenced by haters, they said games do not run at 1080p because they are not Forcing devs to aim for 1080p


I remember that announcement I did not get why so many people hated it.

HeyitsHazard I know this will be used for console wars soon but IGN has their video and poll for best console.Not just for overall but in all other fields and they have experts talk about each as well as their opinion for the best one.The results will be posted on the 16th.


In my opinion the console war is stupid why do they have to compete there is no need it is just a games console just leave it to the customer

I've seen gameplay on both the One and the PS4 and you can barely notice the difference from 900p to 1080p, which is good considering I just bought an Xbox One.
