Xbox One disc-free console – analyst weighs in on rumor

4.8
Last night, a rumor surfaced that Microsoft was preparing to release a white 1TB Xbox One at retail, without a disc drive. Today, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has called the idea “dumb, dumb, dumb,” yet has also dismissed it as a complete rumor.

Speaking in an industry note, Pachter said if even true in the slightest, it would alienate not only retailer customers, but comsumers as well.

“If this rumor is true, it is one of the dumbest ideas of all time,” he said. “It would alienate GameStop and other retailers, and it would demonstrate that Microsoft can afford to release a 1TB Xbox One at $399 with essentially the same production cost as the $499 model with a 500GB HDD and a Blu-ray drive.

“That would likely cause gamers to believe that the model with a Blu-ray drive is overpriced, or would cause them to believe that Microsoft is greedy.

“I have three words for this idea—dumb, dumb, dumb.”

Pachter said he respects the people at Microsoft “immensely” and that they are “far from dumb.”

“I don’t actually believe the rumor,” he stated.

Rumors of the console were posted on both The Verge and NeoGAF last night, with the later’s source stating the console could launch as soon as October.

NatusVincere Can't wait for this. i 100% hate disc's.
Apart from the fact that it's fake, what else do you want me to tell you?

I'll just make a hard drive replacement.

i dont understand what you mean :s

What i mean is If microsoft is not making a no disc xbox,I'll just replace the 500 gb hard drive with a 1TB hard drive.

i wouldnt do that as it not only voids your warranty but it also bricks the console as you can no longer download the updates to the console its already been tested and a couple bricked consoles later people stopped

ODST The main problem that's not even brought up is how Microsoft ****** their games on demand prices. The lowest you'll see most retail games on the marketplace is $20 for a 5 year old game. Microsoft needs to get their marketplace sorted first before even considering a digital only xbone, or else anyone with this type of console will suffer from ridiculous prices.

You seem to be referring to the 360 marketplace. When clearly this topic is about X1's.

Indeed, but this is from past experience. If you look at a game like Halo 3 (2007) or Gears of War (2006), you'd see they still have an incredible price point compared to that of Ebay, Amazon, heck even Gamestop would be cheaper. I can pick up Fallout 3 for $2 at Gamestop while OXM sell F3 for maybe $15 at cheapest. If this trend continues, who's to say that it wouldn't be the same on Xbone. Give it a year and I guarantee you that BF4, CoD:G, Ryse, and Forza 5 will all still be $60 on the market place or drop maybe $10. You're not going to see the same kind of competitiveness with digital sales as you would from a real world retail disk. With Microsoft able to monopolize the price point on the games they sell and carry in the marketplace, the only place you'd be able to buy from, why not keep the price jacked for all games?
