Borderlands 3 not in development yet

According to Randy Pitchford, Head of Gearbox Software, development of the expected titan of a game known as Borderlands 3 is not yet underway.

Pitchford has big ideas for the title and based on his comments they are just too lofty for the studio at this time. While he made it clear that they are not done with the series as a whole they cannot just start development at this time.

When you think of what Borderlands 3 should be, it should be massive. It should be bigger and better than Borderlands 2. It should carry forward the story. It's probably crazy multiplatform, depending on timing. It would have to be a next-gen game and a current-gen game, if it was coming at any time in the reasonably near future.Randy Pitchford


In a rather refreshing tone he said the following concerning the title, "I'm not going to fuck around with you like Valve does with Half-Life 3."

What do you think of Gearbox actually taking the time and consideration to make a quality sequel versus what some studios have done and rush a sequel to cash in?

It seems like most games are going down this road. It's a good thing to see, we will definitely see a big difference in next generation games.

Hopefully some different classes to choose from in BL3

Borderlands 1/2 was good and they took the time to make BL2, so I don't mind having to wait a long time for BL3, it means Bl3 will be a lot better and more enjoyable

I can't say that i'm too surprised on this. I personally like the decision that gearbox has made, taking he time and consideration making a quality sequel and feel that this will work well form them in terms of publicity and customer loyalty in general. I am greatly looking forward to the next addition in the franchise and will likely look into purchasing it for this reason. I have seen a fair lot of publishers just rushing out sequels lately, to the point of re-using scenes, environments and concepts from previous games and have to say that i don't like it at all, it pushes me away from the company making the games honestly.. it's great to see that some companies are thinking along the same lines

I like their philosophy towards this, even though I love Valve I completely agree! If good games can carry on and become better then they deserve to be made!

Glad they are going to continue this :) Borderlands 2 was a very fun game.

I can only imagine how insane it will be when it's released. The second one was simply amazing and I picture this one being far better. Let's just hope it is.

That might be pushing it, I mean they barely have ideas on the drawing board. Not to mention development hasn't started yet.


Exactly. I bet we won't see BL3 for another 3-4 years. But I don't mind, like he said it has to be bigger and better and that takes time.
