343 Industries franchise development director Frank O'Connor posted the concept art of a dry, dusty settlement, along with his take on the newly revealed game, on Halo Waypoint.
O'Connor noted that many fans had rightly guessed that development for another Halo project would take at least three years, putting Halo 5 outside of the 2014 window teased for a new entry in the series - "suffice it to say, another shoe has yet to drop."
"But we're not just making a new game in that three year span, we're also making a new engine. During the development of Halo 4, we pushed the Xbox 360 and the engine to its limits, and we were happy with the way we were able to make the Halo universe look," he said.
"The Xbox 360 still has a few tricks up its sleeve, even now. We are moving to a whole new platform with the Xbox One - a new architecture, new graphics hardware and bluntly some new ways to think about gaming, period."
O'Connor said that Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 each pushed the world of shooters forward, the first by standardizing the dual-stick control scheme and the second by implementing "broadband matchmaking." 343 Industries is aiming to do the same with Halo 5.
"So in building Halo 5: Guardians, we want to push the ecosystem as well as the universe," he said. "And we'll have some surprises in store for new and loyal players of the series."
Halo 5: Guardians is set to release in 2015, coinciding with the Halo television series produced in collaboration with Steven Spielberg.
