DualShock 4 now wirelessly compatible with PS3

4.5
The PS4's DualShock 4 controller can now be used wirelessly with the PS3.

It was previously possible to connect the new controller to the PS3 with the included USB cable, but it appears that Sony sneakily added more preferable wireless support in the recent 4.60 PS3 firmware update.

However, the PS3 will still only recognize the DS4 as a generic controller device, so only basic functionality is enabled, while rumble force and motion control remain unusable. Game support is also patchy, according to Engadget.

To connect a DS4 wirelessly to PS3, users must:

- Go to 'Accessory Settings' on the PS3 system menu
- Select 'Manage Bluetooth Devices'
- 'Register New Device' to begin scanning for a new device
- Press and hold both the Share Button and PS button on the DS4 until the light starts blinking
- The controller will be detected by the PS3 as a 'Wireless controller'
- Select it to complete registration
Sony recently released PS4 update 1.72, which is said to improve system software stability during the use of some features.

Sony has reassured PS4 owners that previously announced and still undelivered PS4 system features - including a suspend and resume feature that is expected to radically reduce the system boot-to-gameplay load times by keeping the console in a low power state and preserving exact game sessions - are still in development.

Firm Just shows Sony care about being innovative and helping their supporters/customers. All I see when someone mentions Microsoft and Xbox especially is $_$

Microsoft doesn't use the ancient bluetooth with their controllers, therefore this can't really happen. Plus if you read the article it's not even good. Microsoft make money because they're a better company, it isn't their fault that Sony is on the edge of bankruptcy shutting down all their departments. Idiot.

KevinG This is nice of Sony. I am a XBOX owner and quit playing the PS after PS3 but I would like it of Microsoft would make it where the X360 controllers would work for the Xbox One Eighty. But they make $$$ off there X1 controllers so I do not think they would.

Yeah xbox should do something similar

Vizier I seriously hope Microsoft considers doing the same for the Xbox One controller and the Xbox 360. The Xbox One controller feels really great to hold.

This x1000 Every time I switch from the One to the 360 it feels like I'm holding something barbaric. The triggers are so much smoother, joy sticks are easier to move and smoother and the whole controller feels so much better just holding it compared to the 360. Never thought I'd say it but the 360 controller feels like crap compared to the One's, and I used to think they could never improve on the 360 controller....
