1080p for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare? Wait and see, says dev

4.5
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare developer Sledgehammer Games is not yet ready to say what resolution the game will be running at when it hits store shelves in November.

Speaking to OXM, producer Mike Mejia said that the studio is happy with where it is right now but continue to work on improving it.

“So we’re 60 frames a second all the way,” he said. “We are not talking about the – we’re still waiting for announcements to come out in terms of where we’re at with the resolutions, but I can tell you that the three year development title that we’ve had, working with everyone involved to make sure that we’re getting it right… we’re still optimising the game, but even with where we’re at right now, we’re really happy.

“We’re ahead of where we were last year, and we still have time, we still have a couple of months to go.”

Mejia also touched on the extra power provided to Xbox One developers following the June SDK update.

“All that stuff is all coming online too, as we talk to all the first-party partners that we have – we have a direct connection to those guys, so all that stuff is coming online now. I know we’re working with everyone, we’re working with Sony, we’re working with Microsoft, we’re really happy with what we’re looking at.”

Do you think we’re going to have a similar resolutiongate situation with this year’s Call of Duty like we did with Ghosts?

justahacker Why is the question not "4k for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare?"?. Let's get with the program, devs. We've had 4k resolutions for a good while and it's shocking that so few games even support this resolution.

Anybody who wants to dispute that the 8th generation consoles are not strong enough to push 4k resolutions, I welcome your idiocy. We were chugging through 1080p just fine on the last generation consoles. We played Grand Theft Auto V in all of its glory on the last generation consoles. These consoles, among other things, had 512MB of RAM (Xbox 360) or 256 DRAM (PS3), graphics cards with less than 100MB of RAM for graphics processing, and three cores or less on their processors. Come at me and I'll shoot a ton of holes in your argument.

4k resolutions pl0x.

LOL you really have no idea what you are talking about, the XB1 and PS4 would not be able to push 4k on any game as they are WAY too weak to do so. 2 GTX 780ti's in SLI can't even run some PC games with acceptable framerates at 4k resolutions and those are about 4x the power of the XB1 and PS4. So yeah keep thinking the current gen consoles can run games in 4k when they can just about manage 1080p as it is.

Learn more about software engineering and then try again. They are NOT too weak. We have not been able to optimize enough at this current date to be able to use 4k resolutions on the consoles. You really think that I have no idea what I'm talking about? I literally just explained how the abysmal specs of the old consoles could carry GTA V albeit barely seven years after the consoles were released. It's not a matter of hardware. It is a matter of software optimization. Software will ALWAYS trump hardware. It's a matter of time and the amount of research put into the current generation.

@ Latias, your point is much more what I'm getting at. As of now, there are a few high end gaming PCs running Titans and such that are able to run the games that support 4k resolution at reasonable framerates. Keeping that in mind, none of these games are truly optimized for 4k due to the small amount of consumers that can actually make use of the 4k resolution. As we move forward in time, more and more resources will be devoted to making this a reality not only for less high end PCs but for the current generation of consoles as well.

Oh - there was one person earlier who corrected my error on the Xbox 360 and PS3s' ability to run games at 1080p on a normal basis at native resolution without rescaling. Thanks for the correction.

You never explained how the old consoles could play GTA V all you said is we could play them and list it's hardware. It's really not hard for the devs to tone down a games graphics so it runs smoothly its the same thing as changing the graphics settings in a PC game so it runs smoothly on your hardware.

Why wouldn't they want to use the full potential of the console? Im more than happy with 60 FPS and thought that ghosts ran smooth, I guess time will only tell.

What about the fact that Pcs many times more powerful than the xb1, struggle to hit 4k at a playable fps. The xb1 lousy gpu would run COD (a simple game) at 5 fps on a good day at 4k.

The only hope for 4k this gen is basic indie 2d games, that don't put much stress on the hardware.

how about the price and lack of consumers using 4k?

That one is a pretty fair argument.

lol I feel sorry for you. You have no idea what you're talking about. No games bar a few indies ran 1080p on the previous gen consoles. They were all upscaled to 1080p from 720p. The upscaler on the previous consoles was extremely good at what it did. The current gen consoles still haven't maximized it's potential to have the best upscaler. Nor have they mastered the console yet. I'd like to see you shoot tons of wholes in my argument. Frankly, the PS4 doesn't even support 4K output from games. So, they're stuffed. When the Cloud comes into play and the new API's, we might keep constant 1080p but we aren't going to be hitting anywhere near 4k. We haven't touched 2K yet. Please do so research and eductae yourself.

I never said that the consoles were as of now capable of running 4k resolutions. My point is that nobody seems to give a damn about 4k - the PS4's incapability of running 4k resolutions is paramount to this. And of course I understand that we are early in the generation and we have not quite mastered the eighth generation yet. But my point on this front is that I feel like we're not even trying. We're still bringing MANY new things to the seventh generation consoles almost a year after the release of the eighth generation.

And there were plenty of seventh generation titles that ran at 1080p. Sure, they were almost all powerhouse titles like Call of Duty coming up on the second half of the generation or non-resource-intensive indie titles. But with that being said, this title is a...what? I don't see the reasoning for why Advanced Warfare has a questionmark after 1080p when previous Call of Duty games on last gen consoles were capable of this feature.

There were a couple of points I didn't cover in this, for the record.
