Activision exec says CoD Advanced Warfare can outsell Ghosts

The CEO of Activision Publishing believes Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare can eventually outsell its predecessor Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Eric Hirshberg told GamesIndustry that although pre-orders for Advanced Warfare were reportedly lower than those of Ghosts, the newly released title is capable of outperforming last year's series entry in the long-term.

"We see purchase intent well above last year and we see engagement with the brand in social media channels all being markedly up, so I'm still optimistic," Hirshberg said.

A report from industry analysts last week claimed pre-orders for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare were down significantly from those of Ghosts.

Cowen and Company wrote: "Advanced Warfare is now pacing almost 40 per cent behind last year's Ghosts (vs 50 per cent last week) and almost 70 per cent behind 2012's Black Ops 2 (vs 80 per cent last week)."

But Hirshberg suggested these figures were not necessarily completely accurate, since they often focus on a single retailer (in this case Amazon) and don't take into account other types of pre-orders, such as digital sales.

"Preorders are a good barometer for day one, but I don't think they reflect the overall demand for the product," Hirshberg said. "[They] don't represent what they used to because of the move to digital and all the ways people can buy the game."

Advanced Warfare was released today on Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Early reviews of the game have been positive.

My spidey senses are telling me you've never even played the game, and if you haven't, it's really hard to judge the game play based off of assumptions. In the event you did buy the game, not only are you stupid for purchasing a game you knew you wouldn't like, but you also made yourself look silly by posting this comment.

I bought the game why would I make assumptions? It doesn't even matter that I bought it I can get my money back you idiot.

Anywho, the reason why i believe AW will outsell ghosts is because there is so much difference in the game mechanics when you compare AW with ghosts, AW just has better mechanics and gameplay.

I agree with you on that, I remember buying a spongebob game on ps2 when i was little, and it was a lot better than ghost. lol


Revenge of the flying dutchman? That was the game I would happily take over ghosts anyday.


Battle for Bikini Bottom was the best, never tried revenge of the flying dutchman, would you recommend?


I like how it suddenly became a discussion about classic spongebob games. I've played the movie game and battle for bikini bottom. Has anyone ever played Lights, Camera, Pants? Basically a spongebob Mario party game, used to play that a lot.

Kimbrel It better outsell Ghosts, it definitely deserves it. AW is a ton of fun and the innovation was done very well. I know the game isn't groundbreaking in the video game world but it is for COD and Sledgehammer has done/is doing great things with it. I think more and more people will purchase it now that they see that it's a ton of fun. Really enjoying the game so far :)


Thank you! Ive seen why too much hate for this game and honestly SHG did an amazing job on the game and its been the best one since BO1.
