The reason why you can’t change your PSN name

Sony has explained why it won’t allow users to change their PSN IDs.

Sony Computer Entertainment America president and CEO Shawn Layden explained the reason in an interview with IGN.

“We don’t want to make it so that you can go in, grief a bunch of people in Far Cry, change your avatar, change your username, go into CoD and grief everybody over there. We want to stop that,” he said.

“[We want to do name changing] in a way that’s transparent, but also don’t let people morph themselves, either.

“And yeah, it’s terrible that you have to make decisions on a service sometimes by optimizing around the bad actor. I hate that we have to do that. So we’re trying to balance that between… the 99 percent of users going to have a good experience, how can we help make that happen without giving one more tool to the bad actor to go in and ruin the experience for others?”

Layden added that name-changing and other features are on Sony’s roadmap for future updates.

Yeah they definitely need to implement some way of doing it.


They've needed a way for years tho, doubt it will happen fast tho.

If you had a lot of money you would want more, everything around us is about money, So why are you saying hes money hungry?

Hash Like AppleFTW said a once a year name change would be nice but I think that if the user has been reported they should have there name changing privilege revoked.


What if users just report eachother as a joke? That won't work there needs to be a valid system for this if they do implement it.

I would love to see this in the future for PS4s. That would help alot as far as clans go so you don't have to restart by making a new account.

It does seem like a legit reason because i can just tell that people will abuse this way too much to get away with things when they mod or troll people.

AppleFTW What are they on about griefing people then changing IDs then doing it on a different game, only allow one name change a year and then they can only do it once, and it cant be that much of a problem, surely if someone was being that annoying in game, youd report them there and then surely?


Your idea of a one-time gametag change each year seems like a reasonable way to implement name changing on the Playstation.
