PlayStation won’t be following Xbox with backwards compatibility

Head of PlayStation Europe, Jim Ryan, says PlayStation has no intention of following suit with backwards compatibility and here’s why.

Talking to MCV about the Xbox announcement, he said “It is an entirely legitimate approach, and if you are seeking to upgrade 360 owners to Xbox One, it is a very logical approach to take.”

Ryan commented that the Xbox announcement wasn’t very clear on how the feature would work, adding ” I suspect there might be a few twists in that particular tale. But we will see”.

He confirmed that Sony would be investing in software updates like SharePlay, Play as you Download, and Suspend/ Resume features.

“Unfortunately there are just not sufficent enough software engineers in the world for everyone to do everything. Each platform holder has to make their choices, we made one and they made another. Their choice is entirely legitimate, and I think our choice is legitimate, too. In some ways it is quite nice to have points of difference between the two platforms, and people will decide which approach suits them best.”

Addressing the backwards compatibility feature of consoles, Ryan said “We have experience of backwards compatibility. The earliest PS3 model was backwards compatible with PS2, and it is a much requested feature… but actually it’s not so greatly used.

“On balance, we are happy with our approach and we don’t wish to be defensive about it at all. But as I say, both approaches are legitimate.”

DPM This sucks seeing as there are a lot of old games I'd like to play that aren't on the PS4. But as for games like COD, I'd rather be getting early DLC than playing MW2.


All the new cods suck complete eggs.

Well, Sony gets CoD early ( Activison sold them self to Sony since CoD is dying and they made more money being bought ) so that's a good thing... I think...

He wasn't being an elitist. His statement was valid. This topic is about how Sony doesn't support backwards compatibility. SO you are allowed to bring up systems that support it. He is right though. Every game, and all from ps2 and below work on pc, even Wii.


No, this article was referring to two consoles in regard to backwards compatibility, not the PC nor Wii. Clearly the PC plays all types of games, it was unnecessary to say and the only reason it was said was to imply he was better than console gamers. Every PC nerd does this when two consoles are fighting. Everyone expect "that guy" to post a passive-aggressive post implying PC is superior, but "that guy" doesn't understand he falls in the same category as the "First!" posters on articles. Either way the post goes to the wayside as e eryone expects it, but for whatever reason we're giving fuel for the fire.


Why is someone a "PC nerd" for choosing to play games on PC?
You play games on console. Does that make you a console ***? No. You are a gamer. Just like I am.
I have every right to post something about PC. It just so happens that what I posted is a fact that bothers you. That's fine. The person who made the post was implying that PC doesn't have backwards compatibility issues. Not that PC is better. Get over yourself.
