Activision responds to Infinite Warfare being murdered on YouTube

3.7
The first trailer for this year's Call of Duty game, Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, debuted on YouTube on Monday and has since racked up more than 8 million views. But many viewers — hundreds of thousands of them — have expressed their displeasure with the futuristic Call of Duty by giving the video a thumbs-down.

With 370,000 dislikes (and growing), the overwhelmingly negative response has made Infinite Warfare's trailer one of the most disliked videos on YouTube.

Many of the complaints from YouTube commenters center on the futuristic sci-fi bent Infinity Ward is taking with this year's entry. Infinite Warfare features space travel and battles on distant planets, and many viewers have been making unkind comparisons to franchises like Halo and Star Wars, saying they'd prefer a more grounded, realistic Call of Duty. The two most recent Call of Duty games, Black Ops 3 and Advanced Warfare, also featured futuristic settings, but kept the action on Earth.

Another source of negativity is Activision's decision to attach the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, a made-over version of Call of Duty 4, to Infinite Warfare. Activision says it won't sell Modern Warfare Remastered separately.

according to Activision, there's a bright side to all the attention Infinite Warfare's premiere trailer has been getting.

During an earnings call today, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg was asked about the mass dislikes flooding Call of Duty's YouTube channel. Hirshberg did his best to stay positive and provide some context. Here's his response:
First of all, you gotta love the passion of gamers. This is an industry like no other and a fan base like no other. We love that our fans treat this franchise like their own and have such strong points of view about it. There just aren't many entertainment franchises on earth that can generate the kind of passion that Call of Duty can... and that's a good thing.

Secondly, of course, we know there are people in our community who are nostalgic for the boots on the ground-style gameplay; that's why we made Modern Warfare Remastered. But we also have millions of people in our community who want to have new innovative experiences in the game each year and Infinite Warfare is going to deliver that.

The good news is this year we found a way to deliver both in one package while keeping our community together. While of course we see the passionate opinions on line, we also look at other measurements and the fact is — while it's very early — pre-orders are off to a very strong start. Views of the reveal trailer ... are up and, in fact, the number of likes per view on the Infinite Warfare trailer are the highest we've ever seen.

We've seen this in the franchise before. The reveal trailer for Black Ops 2, which took the franchise into the future for the first time, had the most dislikes of any reveal trailer we had ever made at that time. And that went on to become our most successful game ever.

Right now, the franchise has never been stronger. We have more people playing Black Ops 3, a game that takes place in the future, with boost jumps and fictitious weapons, than any game in our history.

What we know for sure is that if we always just did what worked in the past and never took any creative risks, we wouldn't have a franchise. The day to worry is the day we stop trying new things.

Grimlock i'm actually not going to lie... So many people say call of duty is the same thing every year but you guys still get mad when they try to do something new and crying saying you want boots on the ground even though you just said its the same every year. also you guys also hate when the game is first announced but when the game comes out everyone is loving the game for example black ops 3 we saw more exo suits and all you guys did was cry when the games trailer was revealed and now more then 1 million people still play the game.

No, you have it all wrong. I am an infinity ward guy up until they released ghosts. After that cod just sucked in general. When we said we wanted innovation, that didn't mean oh we want you to go 500 years into the future, that meant we want some minor changes to the modern and ww2 settings. What made cod 4 great is that it was right after cod3, which sucked, so they went back to the drawing board and created perks and killstreaks etc. They didn't say oh cod3 socks let's go into the future a billion years. No they innovated and came up with what cod is today. When we say we want innovation, we want the type of change that came from cod3 to cod4. I don't know what that is, that's why game developers make all that money to figure it out. We want innovation not a time travel game.

maxmaxthex So they're trying to blame all this future shit on black ops 2 even though aw brought all this boost jump shit and the portion of the fans who want this future shit is small

Wasn't Black Ops 2 the first to feature space combat?

Exactly. They're losing people, so of course they put in content where players can purchase CoD Points to gain gear in-game. They're becoming money hungry and they won't listen to their audience who have been busting on them for years trying to get them to return CoD to what it was, a good game.

Sean They knew this was coming and that's why they remastered CoD4. Black Ops 3 is also not as hot as they claim it is.

Exactly. They "blow up" their numbers to make it seem like their game is hot shit, when realistically it takes a while to even find a match in the game. It has taken me close to 5 minutes to even find a game in Search and Destroy and that's normally flooded with people.

MW2 used to have over a million people concurrent online now they won't even display the usercount. right now Unreal Tournament made in 1999 has more people concurrent than Call of Duty Ghosts.

Their user count has to be well below 300,000 if that.

Steam reports for Black Ops 3 highest concurrent today was 11,740 right now its 4,893. even if we say CoD on console does 7X as good as PC that's still a shocking drop from 1 Million concurrent.

This 'franchise' is basically doing an Assassins Creed. Don't get me wrong, I love AC & COD.. Several years ago.. But there's only so much a franchise can do before it becomes dull, repetitive, and quite honestly, **** shit.

Ever since AC Brotherhood, it's been adding in things that are shit. Same for COD. Ever since Ghosts, they've added in crap that a majority of people don't enjoy, personally, these 'EXO Suits' are stupid. I quit being a 'hardcore' COD player since that stupid change. Then they added in these 'abilities' that these different characters have in the most recent COD. I know a lot of people enjoy them, I again, think they're stupid, mainly because of the futuristic portion of it.

COD NEEDS to remain a 'modern' day shooter, and by modern I mean, WW1/WW2/Current time setting. The future setting has been milked to **** and the franchise is dying. Battlefield doesn't improve much each year but I won't be surprised if this years Battlefield takes the lead.

Activision will disagree what the community wants. The community didn't want jet packs and booting around the map like playing Halo. Us as a community we want "boots on the ground" and just only that. It just shows over 300k+ people want "boots on the ground" The people who liked the Trailer seriously likes Ghosts. We don't want futuristic jets, spaceships flying around the place. It's just ruining the COD experience. This is why people who like Cod4 will always stick to Cod4.

Amen.
