Tutorial on Dip-Dying plastic parts, in this case Xbox Stuff
(You can make clear plastic darker this way, but White plastic takes better)
First of all **SAFETY** You will be using a hot stove !!!!!
Se7ensins.com or Myself are not responsible for you if you hurt yourself doing this
If you live with your parents ask them for permission and help, if your an adult use your head !!
Heads-up Finish will stay the same -- matte will stay matte, glossy will stay glossy
First our materials
1. rubbing alcohol to clean parts
2. RIT brand dye 8 oz bottle (Black - or whatever color you find you like, but ive only done black)
3. latex gloves (optional I dont like dyed fingers it will happen)
4. a wire mesh ladle to hold part
(I didnt have one so I used a soup spoon, You DO NOT Want to drop the part IT WILL MELT)
5. an old pot (this will now become your dying pot, I dont want to hear from angry moms/wifes about missing pots)
6. an old bowl (see above)
(make sure your parts fit in the pot and bowl
7. paper towels or rags to keep things clean
Now, we prepare our work-area
1. remove any stickers (place on wax paper), or anything you dont want dyed
2. fill pot w/ water half-full
3. place on stove and heat to boil *SAFETY*
4. while the stove is heating the water, fill the bowl half-full
5. lay down a few paper-towels or rags to keep things clean
6. have a few paper-towels or rags handy in case of spill
7. have the RIT dye, dipper, and parts handy
8. when water is boiling turn it down to medium heat
Next, add dye
1. add half bottle of RIT dye **CAREFULL steam will be HOT**
Now, dipping the part(s)
1. place part on dipping utensil
2. dip in the dye, but not for more than a few seconds (1-1000, 2-1000, 3-1000, or the part will warp, melt, etc.)
3. let it cool between dips
4. the color will be greenish, dont worry keep dipping
5. once it starts to get dark, rinse in the bowl
6. keep dipping till its black
7. rinse again and clean real good under running water (dont splash dye around)
8. turn off stove when done
** REMEMBER HOT STEAM is coming off the water/dye mix **
and, here you go
Okay, now clean-up
1. clean parts w/ mild dish soap, then dry w/ paper-towels (assemble project later)
2. dump out water from bowl, rinse sink well (if you plan on using the bowl again, clean really well)
3. clean your dipping utensil (or my case threw away)
4. run really hot water and dump the dye pot, rinse sink well
5. rest is common-sense
once again **BE CAREFUL**
Use this technique at your OWN RISK
