This shows you how to add a program so it starts up automatically on log in, like windows.
Once logged in go to sytem > Preferences > Sessions menu item.
You will see this and click add.

Put the full path of the executable that you want to start when logging in. You can also browse for the program you want added in.
If you are more technical, you could always modify the start-up script. This is usually used for programs that are required to be executed on start-up, or just for personal programs.
