First off I would like to note that this is my first tutorial for anything. So please go lightly on me.

The point of this tutorial is to explain how to re-container .MKV files for playback or streaming to your Xbox 360 Console WITH NO "CONVERTING", Because after scouring the net I realized no one had taken the time to fully explain a HOWTO and the logistics of it. What better place to post than TTG?

I find that the best way to get these to play on xbox is to use AVI Demux. [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Now, There are two different containers that can be used.
.AVI & .MP4. If the RAW VIDEO inside of the container file is "H264/AVC" then you MUST container it into an .MP4 because .AVI is an unsupported container for the raw video files and you will only get audio. (You may find out by clicking the "I" icon next to the save icon.)

Let's say that it IS H264/AVC.
Load the .mkv file, it will give you a prompt saying "H.264 detected. If the file is using B-Frames it could lead to crashes or stuttering etc." Select NO
On the second prompt,"Index is not up to date." Again, select NO.
You should now see your video in the player integrated into this program.
On the left side, you will see "Video/Audio/Format" as drop down catagories.
Copy is default for A/V and AVI is default for format.
Keep video as "Copy" and change the audio to "AAC(Faac)" in case the raw audio is unsupported.
Change "Format" to "MP4" above "MP4 (PSP)"

Now click the SAVE icon.
It should open a file browser to which you have to NAME IT YOURSELF.
I usually name it exactly what I had and toss it in a separate folder.
PLEASE NOTE :!:
You MUST add the file suffix YOURSELF to the end of the file name just before saving (Or after saving if you forgot) Simply add ".mp4" to the end of the name or ".avi" if you placed the content in an .avi container.

If the raw video inside of the .mkv container is NOT H264/AVC.
You MAY select ".AVI" as the format.
And audio may not have to be re-encoded like with the ".mp4". So basically everything can be left at the defaults.

This takes about 4 minutes per file. Doesn't support batch files.
HOWEVER, This is literally the easiest thing you can do without demux/remux'ing it.
Works like a charm and only requires a single program unlike almost every single method I have found on the internet.

After you have created the mp4/avi file you will need update the library for your xbox. You right click the folder and "Add to library>Videos" if said folder is already added, remove and re add it via windows explorer. It won't work through WMP.

If you would like me to clarify or add screen shots to help. Please ask.
Also, mods, I wasn't sure where to place this so I picked the best catagory I could.

Good luck & happy streaming
