Making your Xbox power led light red instead of green (v0.1)

Hi. In this tutorial I will show you how to turn the circular Xbox power LED from the normal (and pretty boring) green, into a bright red light.

Here is what you will actually need to do to change the colours around:

1) Open up your Xbox using the normal method (Xbox-Scene has tutorials on how to do this if you are unsure). Make sure you have removed the DVD-ROM and the HDD, and possibly the motherboard too, although this is not a necessity.



2) Disconnect the set of yellow wires from the motherboard.



3) Using a knife or other implement, (I used an open pair of scissors), pry the front of the Xbox away from the rest.

4) You will see a small PCB (Printed Circuit Board) affixed to the back of the part you just removed. You will need to remove this from the front of the unit, by pulling it away (bear in mind that it is clipped in place).



You should now have the PCB free from the rest of the Xbox, looking like this:



5) You have two choices here. You will need to either de-solder the two LEDs from the board, or, as I did, simply snip off the LEDs three legs.

6) Turn the LED over, so that the connections are inverted, i.e. the one which was formerly at the top of the board is now at the bottom, and vice versa.

7) Re-solder the LEDs in their new inverted position.

8) Put everything back together, (make sure you remember to reconnect the clip of yellow wires back into the motherboard), and turn the Xbox back on.

9) If you put the LEDs in the right way around, you should now have a red power LED!



NOTE: I assume it is also possible to only swap one of the LEDs around, and have a half-green-half-red power LED, but I didnt try this since I didnt think it would look particularly appealing.
