Xbox One sticking at $499, Kinect still 'core part' of experience

4.8
Joystiq had a chance to speak with Xbox Chief Product Officer Marc Whitten this evening, following the company's DRM policy changes on Xbox One, and figured if we're already talking about changes, how about that $499 price?

"We really believe deeply in the value that we're delivering. Not just for the first day of launch, which we think is going to be amazing, with amazing games and entertainment experiences, but what this architecture can deliver over the long term." said Whitten. "We feel good about our price."

What about changing the price by removing the Kinect?

"We still absolutely believe in Kinect. It's a core part of the architecture. Frankly, it's really critical that you build it as something that's always there, always part of the platform. So that game creators, experience creators can know they can rely on it. And you, the user, that there's always a consistent experience. That it's not just an accessory."

Consumers aren't the only ones happy with today's changes. Both GameStop and rental service GameFly have applauded Microsoft for today's Xbox One policy shift.

661King I would gladly pay $499 for the X1 and Kinect, IF it was possible to completely unplug it from the system.

I don't find it being there a bad thing or I don't understand why people care so much that it's there.

The main concern is privacy. Having a camera on at all times looking at you is something that makes people uncomfortable. Contrary to popular belief on TTG, Microsoft is not a reliable corporation that should intrude on that much privacy. It has already been discovered that MS intercepts skype messages and calls. It has also been revealed that MS has been giving the U.S. Gov. information about its customers without a warrant. Whats to stop MS from giving the Gov. video/audio from kinects, under a "search warrant"?

so im assuming you don't own any device that has a built in camera or microphone then ?

Yeah, pretty much. The only camera I own is the one on my phone, which isn't always connected to the internet.

Your a clown then. The simple fact that you can disconnect it when your not playing games and could cover the camera/mic invalidates any issue

How am I a clown? Is it because I'm informed? The simple fact that you're still trying to defend this with such a moronic and uniformed argument makes me think your 12. You honestly think its OK for MS to spy on you while you play your games? That type of mentality is what is wrong with this generation. You buy something that you mistrust so much you cover it? Buying it for $100 extra just to "cover it up". There is a reason why its mandatory even though its possible to navigate the dash/features using the remote.

Tell me, how would you cover up the Kinect so it cant hear or see you?

The fact that you think i would do that is just jokes, i was explaining the fact that this is not some sort of plan by microsoft/NSA to "spy" on everyone, its just an obvious development of the system as a whole and you can simply turn it off completely when you're not using the system. I fail to see how this is some sort of privacy invasion when there's already thousands of kinect users already. Informed? you sound like a illuminati child. I have zero problems with paying for this console at the current price and i feel that the price is justified by what you are receiving in return. As for kinect i can only see positives from the integration of every console.

I don't really care about having Kinect on all the time. It might even make navigating around the Xbox even easier.

Gossip The price should drop.

At least post a reason as to why the price should drop. I'm tired of your simple sentences on every news story that has little to nothing to do with the dang article. It's like you read the headline and then spam. The price wont drop due to the kinect being a "core-part". This is what is bumping up the price of the Xbone.

hahaha jokes comment. I agree though, pointless comment

I agree with you 100%! Everytime I see Gossip post it is pointless and just spam. I think the price is fine, and they said it will most likely drop in 2014.

Liquidvlade For those concerned with privacy, I'd just simply tape the Kinect. I personally think it's great that they are adding it with the system because that way developers can actually make good use of it and make some cool experience with it instead of gimmicky games.

I liked the first Kinect, can't wait to try Kinect 2.0

I'm just going to face it against the wall, that or download a photo of something that is supposed to be scary and tape it in front of it :3
