Xbox One: Microsoft explains why it doesn’t include a headset

Xbox One consoles will not be bundled with headsets because it comes with Kinect, Microsoft has said. The company has issued a statement on the matter

In a statement to Ars Technica, a Microsoft official said, “Xbox One does not include a pack-in headset accessory.

“Each Xbox One includes the new Kinect sensor, with a highly sensitive multi-array microphones designed to enable voice inputs and chat as a system-level capability, both in-game and with Skype and other experiences. For gamers who prefer a headset, we have a variety of offerings that you can find on the Xbox Wire.”

Sold separately, the Xbox One Chat Headset has not been priced, but it is confirmed as having mono sound, a directional mic, volume control and a mute button.

Kinect does have cameras sure, but it’s no use to people who want to play a shooter and who doesn’t want to have the sound of gunfire blaring across their home while their kids are trying to get some kip.

Well if people don't blast their TVs its usually okay.


I usually used to mute my TV anyway, but it's nice to have the option to have the TV on at the same time!

Exactly! Would make things so much more simple! They would probably save more money giving us all a free headset, than trying to make the mic on the Kinect good enough to use without a hitch!

I know right, on the 360 you could hear every single noise that was being made. Even footsteps and moving your chair, it was really annoying to get in a game and hear those kinect mics!


Your chair moving? Unless you had some super noisy chair or was literally sitting in front of the Kinect, I don't think it would pick that up. Now I know it picked up TV noises and when people were talking while you were on the Kinect but I think that was about it.


I would still much rather having an actual headset, rather than having to rely on the kinect itself..

Most people put it underneath the TV so the speakers are hitting the Kinect. Hopefully they at least fix it to some degree where it won't be much of a bother.
