PS4 and Xbox One are 'essentially the same', says John Carmack

id Software co-founder also thinks Xbox One backlash was a "bit of a witch hunt"

PS4 and Xbox One are "essentially the same" in terms of performance, according to id Software co-founder John Carmack.

Speaking during his keynote at QuakeCon 2013 keynote (via Gamasutra), the lead Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake programmer said that while he hasn't "done really rigorous benchmarking", he was surprised to find how similar the two new consoles are.

"I haven't done really rigorous benchmarking [but] they're very close and they're both very good," he said.

"It's almost amazing how close they are in capabilities, how common they are."

Carmack went on to say that the initial backlash to Xbox One was "a bit on the side of a witch hunt", adding: "The future is obvious right there, and it will be good for us in general. A lot of these things are inevitable."

Carmack was also critical of Kinect, which he described as "sort of like a zero-button mouse with a lot of latency... Kinect still has some fundamental limitations with the latency and framerate... It's fundamentally a poor interaction."

Xbox One will be available in 21 markets this November. The Xbox One price has been set at £425 / €499 / $499.

Sony has confirmed a "holiday 2013" PS4 release date in Europe and the US and a PS4 price of £349 / €399 / $399.

-Vision I hope they add PC cross play with each other in this round of consoles

I personally don't think they will do that. Most console players will have multiple consoles if anything.

When you really think about it, it's pretty much the same thing. The games and dashboard are the only things different.

PS4 will but not Xbox One because it violates MS's crappy policies that's why Square isn't letting them have the FFIV reboot, PS4 players and PC players will be able to play together.

Overall they pretty much are but I will buy the PS4 over the Xbox One one day...

OmittingCoder I don't know why people are still buying consoles. The only reason I'd buy a console is because of the exclusives. Besides that you should just get a PC.

We buy console because

1) we like wireless controllers
2) Playing on actual TV's
3) We're not introverts
4) Our friends have console
5) Xbox dashboard is so easy and well set up
6) you can play on a couch and relax
That's well said. Also, you can get consoles (such as the Xbox & PS3) that run games pretty much fine for online a hundred pounds but with a PC you're spending 100 alone on the operating system...

GibbityTree I agree 100% on what Carmack said about the Kinect.

I don't really think that the Kinect is needed for the Xbox One, I think it would of been much easier to stick with the controller only.

ESRB The only difference between the two are the controllers, the gamers, and some of the games.

Not necessarily. The way they perform is different, they both use different processors and gpus.

The ways that the systems operate are also different, the PS4 just seems a little more Gaming Orientated to me
