Microsoft Banning Consoles For GTA V Leaks

An Xbox 360 gamer has managed to get hold of a copy of Grand Theft Auto V before its official release date and has been posting Vine videos with footage from the game, which have spread to NeoGAF.

One of the videos contained his gamertag and Microsoft have quickly dealt a blow and have banned his entire console from Xbox Live, meaning he’ll have to buy a new one.

The Rockstar policy on posting copyrighted material from its games is very clear:

Pre-Release Footage: No pre-release leaked footage of any kind: Any posting of in-game footage from leaked copies of the game prior to its official release date will be taken down, regardless of how the game was obtained. This includes “early unboxing” videos.

Obviously we will not be linking to the videos since they could be considered to contain spoilers, but what do you think of the swift wielding of the ban hammer? Has justice been dealt or is it overkill from Rockstar and Microsoft?

I think that it is good that they do this, because it makes it fair to all of us. I dont understand why people cant just wait to get the game on the release date...

I would ban them to if it was up to me


If it were me I would ban the ID not the console but if it was a legit copy I would ban them for releasing it early and being stupid and posting their ID online.

It took them like 5-6 years to make the game. Why shouldn't they act in a hostile manner? You're leaking gameplay.


There is nothing wrong with actually having a copy early. That's fine, it's the leaked gameplay that's retarded. If you get a game early do us all a favor and "don't" leak footage. You just mess up the experience for everyone else.


Sounds like someone has never heard of a 'reviewer' - Now I know there's a difference between a review and a leak but most reviews these days have video footage with them and come before the street date, just saying.

Also, It's doubtful Rockstar have a case to answer, look up copyright fair use.


I wasn't talking about reviews though lol. A straight up leak of gameplay footage has been out on Youtube (and has since been taken off) and now their are bits and pieces are on Vine. Though the leaks I saw weren't really major, they were just 1 minute videos of people doing some new things. A review by IGN that shows off glimpses of the game here and there isn't that bad. The glimpses we see in the trailers is stuff they would most likely show.


Even leaking a little of the game Rockstar are showing no mercy and to be honest I don't blame them I would be annoyed if I had worked on something for 5-6 years and it to get leaked before release day it is definatley going to be an interesting game from what I have seen from the leaks but a console ban is heavy for just playing a legit copy early as for the people who downloaded it early and put it on ISO I hope they all get banned I prefer to support the developers and actually buy the gamer.
