PlayStation 4 will not support CDs, mp3s or PC media streaming

4.5
PlayStation 4 will not play audio CDs and does not support mp3 playback, Sony has confirmed.

While every past Sony console has supported audio CD playback, the PS4 will not. Those who wish to select their own music during games will need to use Sony's Music Unlimited streaming service.

Meanwhile, mp3 files will not be supported on the PlayStation 4, and nor will it support media servers or DLNA support, allowing media streaming from a PC.

Despite these announcements and the numerous customer complaints that have followed, comments made by Sony worldwide studios president Shuhei Yoshida on Twitter suggest the company is open to feedback.

"Thanks for the feedback to the lack of MP3 and DLNA support at the launch of PS4," Yoshida wrote. "I'll share with the PS4 Dev team for future consideration."

The news comes via a lengthy FAQ which addresses every facet of the PS4.

The console will release November 29 in Europe and Australia, and November 15 in North America.

HellSpawner Im fine with this due to my ipod.

It won't affect most people because they are always buying apple products.

At least they have already heard the complaints. I was both shocked and disappointed that it wouldn't support Media Servers, as my PS3 is currently my center of entertainment and has been for years. Come on Sony, this is just lousy. I've been so positive about the PS4 and Sony this year, this came as a serious blow and a reminder that that old, ugly Sony attitude still exist.

Customer freedom, you've been the number one console company this year to support it, and then you come with this crap? But at least they have already noticed that we're not gonna sit silently and take it.

That's pretty much what many people are thinking around now seeming that most people play their music through either their portable music device or computer

You would think little features like this would be in a next generation console when the same features are present in the previous generations console. Seems like a little step back which is annoying as many people like listening to CD's through their consoles.

FrenzyRG We can still change this if everyone complains to SONY

Sony did say that they will be putting MP3 and DLNA support into consideration, complaining may not be the best option but if a large amount of people support it then there may be a change of them putting more of an effort into integrating it
In my experience "concideration" means no, at least not for a long time.

That's true.. if there is an overwhelming amount of support for it they may hurry it up but other then that it will be in "consideration" for a long time if not indefinably. Sony seems to think that these things are not of importance for the experience that they want to offer

As for the lack of MP3 and CD playback on the PS4, I can comprehend why that may put off some people, yet personally it is not what I have ever used my console(s) for nor do I expect that to be the case now either. Besides, most of my music listening is done either via a mini-USB flash stick in my car, or from YouTube channels which I can access on my desktop, laptop, on my smart TV either via it's built-in wi-fi receiver, or (as is most often the case) by connecting my laptop to the TV via a HDMI cable with the added benefit of the sound and music then being played through my hi-fi system and accompanying floor speakers which are better than the built-in speakers on my TV (though they are surprisingly good considering their small size and wattage), and which definitely put the mono-speaker(s) on my laptop to shame.

I do consider it regrettable that Sony have decided not to support external hard-drives for the PS4 - at least for now. Yes, one can replace the internal hard-drive on the PS4 which I think is a splendid feature, yet it would have been even more customer friendly to allow us to plug-n'-play an external storage device. Ah well. Maybe that will change with a future update patch? I hope so at any rate."

SliceFX I laugh at Sony are now are only just releasing the negatives of the PS4 after they let Microsoft take all the heat...

Obviously they need the game first, they are such a slow company
