Nintendo will fail to reach sales goal for Wii U in 2013, say analysts

4.6
Nintendo has no hope of meeting its 9 million unit sales target for the Wii U in 2013, according to several analysts.

Speaking to Bloomberg, two analysts have suggested the company will not sell the 9 million Wii U units president Satoru Iwata promised in October.

"They steadfastly refuse to consider that the product is not interesting to consumers," Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter said. "They will fail to hit 9 million, and they will likely miss their profit goals.

Meanwhile, SMBC Nikko Securities analyst Eiji Maeda says the Wii U is flagging because it has become too niche.

"Wii U has become a game console only for Nintendo fans," Maeda said. "Wii U needs groundbreaking software to draw casual and hardcore gamers."

Pachter predicted the Wii U will sell 6 million units in the fiscal year ending March 2014, while Maeda predicts 6.5 million.

During Nintendo's second fiscal quarter the company shifted only 300,000 units, bringing the global total to 3.91 million units.

The Wii U's performance is sorely lacking compared to the Xbox One and PS4: UK PS4 sales outstripped Wii U's lifetime total in only a matter of hours.

Industry analyst firm DFC Intelligence predicted in November that Wii U lifetime sales will reach 25 million units, or around a quarter of what the Wii achieved.

HOF I liked the WII alot but just didnt have a desire to want the WII U

This is pretty much the same case with me. I was and really still am a pretty big fan of the Wii but i have little to no motivation when it comes to buying the Wii U. It simply doesn't have any appeal

Retro need to get to work on a Metroid sequel. That would shift a few consoles.

Again I wonder why Ninty don't get some more western developers of their own. They're well supplied on the Japanese side.
I'm not talking the big names here. But the creative outfits that share a vision of games as primarily fun and engrossing. Which I'm sure Ninty games are going by recent reviews.
Surely this would help go some way to dispel the 'only for Nintendo fans' label.
From an outside perspective it's easy to see how folks could think 'just another Mario' without being aware of differences between the various games.
If Braben could make massive games on the BBC micro in the 80's it surely can't be that hard to find similar levels of gaming innovation in the west these days.

slapshot101 It was crazy how popular the Wii was compared to the Wii U. 9 million units seems like it is such a small amount of consoles and they couldn't even hit that mark. Maybe with these launches coming to next year they will bring up the totals by a lot.

The Wii was very innovative for its time and drew people in with a diverse and unique library of games. The Wii U on the other hand doesn't really innovate much, doesn't have too many appealing games and is a little behind on the times when it comes to specifications. I kind of understand why it isn't too popular in the market at the moment

KAQ Not suprising their ... nintendo was good but now they aren't because of the xbox and playstions being released :P

I don't think the Wii U would be drawing in much interest even if the Xbox One and PS4 where to be put off until next year. Remember that it has been in the market since 2012 if i remember correctly

It's been out since march

Oh wow, i thought it was a little earlier. Thanks for the correction. It doesn't really change my point though, the console just doesn't innovate enough
