Nintendo will fail to reach sales goal for Wii U in 2013, say analysts

Nintendo has no hope of meeting its 9 million unit sales target for the Wii U in 2013, according to several analysts.

Speaking to Bloomberg, two analysts have suggested the company will not sell the 9 million Wii U units president Satoru Iwata promised in October.

"They steadfastly refuse to consider that the product is not interesting to consumers," Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter said. "They will fail to hit 9 million, and they will likely miss their profit goals.

Meanwhile, SMBC Nikko Securities analyst Eiji Maeda says the Wii U is flagging because it has become too niche.

"Wii U has become a game console only for Nintendo fans," Maeda said. "Wii U needs groundbreaking software to draw casual and hardcore gamers."

Pachter predicted the Wii U will sell 6 million units in the fiscal year ending March 2014, while Maeda predicts 6.5 million.

During Nintendo's second fiscal quarter the company shifted only 300,000 units, bringing the global total to 3.91 million units.

The Wii U's performance is sorely lacking compared to the Xbox One and PS4: UK PS4 sales outstripped Wii U's lifetime total in only a matter of hours.

Industry analyst firm DFC Intelligence predicted in November that Wii U lifetime sales will reach 25 million units, or around a quarter of what the Wii achieved.

There truly is no chance of Nintendo reaching 9 million Wii U sales, the console isn't anything new. The Wii was good, it was an entirely new type of console, but the Wii U didn't really bring anything new to the table.

Vampiric Maybe because it's so horribly out dated.
Nintendo and good performance just don't go together anymore.
The graphics are awful compared to even previous gen consoles, and the majority of the games are aimed at children.

So you play games for the graphics and not the gameplay? Yeah Nintendo's consoles might not be the best when it comes to power but their 1st party games are some of the best games out there not just some polished turd with zero gameplay or the same FPS crapped out year after year.

Well, there are two reasons why.

That would be the Xbox One and the PS4.

Aggie Honestly I feel bad for Nintendo, but on the flip side I do not. They were the kings of gaming in the past and now it just seems that they are not going to return to the power house that they used to be.

They are still kings...They hold majority of sales in hand-held gaming. They won the last generation of consoles between 360, PS3, and WII.

MKP Not surprised, feel pretty bad for Nintendo at this point.

They are a pretty successful company so there isn't really a reason to feel bad for them i guess. The 3DS is going pretty well in the market at the moment and making them a fair bit of money

Ryc The Wii was such a bad idea from the start but that's just me.

No lol. The Wii was the next step in gaming. Playing games by moving. I enjoyed playing the Wii games

Pretty much this. For it's time the Wii was an extremely innovative console.
