The reason why you can’t change your PSN name

Sony has explained why it won’t allow users to change their PSN IDs.

Sony Computer Entertainment America president and CEO Shawn Layden explained the reason in an interview with IGN.

“We don’t want to make it so that you can go in, grief a bunch of people in Far Cry, change your avatar, change your username, go into CoD and grief everybody over there. We want to stop that,” he said.

“[We want to do name changing] in a way that’s transparent, but also don’t let people morph themselves, either.

“And yeah, it’s terrible that you have to make decisions on a service sometimes by optimizing around the bad actor. I hate that we have to do that. So we’re trying to balance that between… the 99 percent of users going to have a good experience, how can we help make that happen without giving one more tool to the bad actor to go in and ruin the experience for others?”

Layden added that name-changing and other features are on Sony’s roadmap for future updates.

The fact that most of the people that are hopping on board with this idiotic statement cannot even spell simple words correctly, clearly states the amount of thought processing that was needed. I love being able to change my name on Steam and it is FREE. There really should not be this much heat in such a small topic.

Couldn't agree more. You have an excellent point, and its a shame Sony hasn't thought of that yet.

I think this is the best option. Haveing to let people know youre changing your name or not being able to change your name seems quit annoying.

But that's why you report people, then when they get a certain amount of reports their account should be reviewed/suspended. More $$ for Sony. In my opinion this excuse is BS.

dafck, has to be the dumbest logic i have ever heard in my life. Paying $10 to change your GT/ID is kinda overpriced, but doing so has 0 problems.

While I can agree with you on some points, I personally feel that having the ability to change your gamertag/psn is a good feature. Over time your personality and opinions will change, so with that, your gamertag/psn should since it is your identity. While you're younger you more or less will put something immature and pointless. As you get older, you don't want to be tied down to that gamertag/psn, so you will probably want to change it. If they can't change it, and they (for example) put OGCxFOXYc0oKIe, why should they be forced to make a new account and lose progress if they've outgrown it?

I'm not sure if you understand what I'm saying, mostly because of the way that I wrote it, but thats what I feel on this matter. Personally, I've had some stupid gamertags, my first being M0nsterEnergy08, and even SKiLLeD KiLLeR (or something like that) at one point. What I'm saying is you're going to change, and on playstation/xbox your gamertag/psn is your identity, and as you change, shouldn't your gaming identity change with it?


i own a xbox & i have 100 friends the most annoying thing was the gamertag name change most my friends would change there gamertage ALOT and i would kick ppl off my friends list cuz i did not know who the hell it was, i hate have to re-kno somone cuz they changed there gamertag, a Gamertag is like your real name u cant ALWAYS KEEP CHANGEING IT, if they do allow u change there gamertag they should have it where u can OLY do it 1-3times & ur stuck with it permently, or have it where u can ONLY change ur gamtertag every 1-3years, to stop ppl from abusing changing gamertag names,
