Multiple Wii online services discontinued today

4.4
As planned, Nintendo is today discontinuing several of the outgoing Wii's online services.

The discontinued services will render the following Wii home menu 'Channels' obsolete:

Nintendo Channel
News Channel
Forecast Channel
Everybody Votes Channel
Mii Contest Channel
Data exchange with Wii Friends

The Data Exchange with Friends closure will affect the "exchange of Wii messages on the Wii Message Board, exchange of Mii characters on the Mii Channel and message/data exchange within some games will be disabled".

This comes seven months after the launch of the Wii's successor, Wii U, in November 2012.

The Wii U Shop channel will remain online for the forceable future, and can be accessed directly via the Wii U system while in its backwards-compatible Wii mode.

Nintendo said within its original announcement, "We at Nintendo sincerely thank you for your continued patronage of our company's products. We apologise to those of you currently using these services."

The Wii had system updates but I don't know if it was continued after the Wii U was released.

I haven't touched my Wii in a while but I don't think in would really affect me either seeing as I mostly played it for the games offline. I guess to the avid Wii players who use these channels, they will be a little irked by this.

Unfortunately many people are doing this in order to spam for the MVC badge. The online services of Wii games have not been discontinued and i doubt they will be for atleast another 6 months

Seems Nintendo is giving up on the Wii to a degree. I know the Wii U is out but I'm sure some people still use the Wii's online features. It might not be a lot but at least it's something.

It's probably because of the falling player-base of the Wii. Most hardcore Wii fans have moved onto the WiiU and others have went on to the Xbox 360 and PS3 in anticipation for next generation consoles

My brother is going to be pissed, whatever serves him right for going to Wii
