Destiny 'potentially a billion dollar franchise', says Activision boss

Bungie's first post-Halo game Destiny has the potential to become Activision's third billion dollar franchise.

That's according to Activision Publishing boss Eric Hirshberg, who says the persistent online shooter looks set to join Call of Duty and Skylanders as a billion dollar IP for the publisher.

"We strongly believe we are on pace to set the all-time pre-order record for a new IP," said an upbeat Hirshberg during an Activision Blizzard earnings call today.

"Based on what we've seen we believe that Destiny has the potential to become the third active billion dollar franchise in the Activision Publishing portfolio," he added.

Destiny is developer Bungie's first game since it parted ways with Microsoft and the Halo franchise it created, and partnered with Activision. Hirshberg, has said previously that the new shooter is "probably one of the biggest investments in a new IP that's ever been made in this industry".

The Destiny release date has been pencilled in for 'early 2014' on PS4, PS3, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

apparently BO2 made 500 million in the first 2 days and a little over 1 billion in two weeks.

I'd of preferred a new Halo, but this game looks interesting and I'd like to try it out :)

I know Bungie wouldn't do something like that, plus they would probably need more time to work on their game, one year isn't enough.


Bungie is a big enough company and a year is enough to make a couple of maps and new guns just like they do with COD every year nothing new


A couple of maps and new guns isnt the same as a huge open world with much much more weapon combinations than cod. This game is not a game where you fight on a single map for ten minutes or so. They need to put time in to a massive world for endless hours of exploration and battles. People stop thinking this game is going to turn into cod! -_-

ZENU96 i dont doubt it, i can see this game being a billion dollar franchise, mabey even bigger than cod...


Maybe when they make a few of them, but I don't think it will be bigger than CoD on the first game. We will just have to wait and see though.


Not sure if they would be bigger then cod it seems like every new cod game there gets tons of more gamers on each one :|
