Microsoft Studios acquires rights to Gears of War series

4.7
Microsoft Studios has purchased the rights to the Gears of War franchise from Epic Games, Microsoft announced. The publisher will take over all existing and future games in the series, and will hand development of future games over to Vancouver, BC developer Black Tusk Studios. Formerly Microsoft Vancouver, Black Tusk was said to be working on a new AAA game for Xbox One as of June 2013.

Rod Fergusson, former Director of Production at Epic Games on the Gears of War franchise, is joining Microsoft and will play a "key studio leadership role" at Black Tusk. The last time we heard from Fergusson he was launching a new studio for 2K in the Bay Area; it would appear that relationship didn't work out.

Each entry in the four-game Gears of War series was published by Microsoft since its introduction in November 2006. The last Epic-developed game in the series was Gears of War: Judgment, which launched in March 2013.

platyui If they are to make a game for the xbox one thay need to forget about Judgment and go back to GoW3 style games.

I agree. I was a big fan of GoW3 but didn't really like judgement honestly.

Well at least I now know there will be future games, but they will definitely have to pick up from Judgement's mistakes. The game was alright but wasn't perfect like the other GoW's.

yeeeeee I'll just stick with GoW3. If they could re-make 3 without the retro and sawed off we'd have the perfect game.

I don't think I've ever seen a Microsoft buyout go well. Goodbye Gears loool

Latias Microsoft coming in to ruin another great series. They ruined Halo and will most likely follow suit here.

That is 100% opinion. Personally I myself, and many others enjoyed halo. You are coming in that Microsoft ruins all of its series. Thats like me coming in and saying sony is ruining uncharted. But btw, Gears of wars has always been an exclusive, And halo has always been exclusive? Well do you know why sony and MS both have exclusives? These companies get exclusives because they are the main/only reason why the game A. Didn't get cancelled or B. They are the biggest funder. So just remember dont just automatically assume they ruined a series. Personally epic games killed gears of war judgement in my opinion.

I never said all of Halo was bad, tell me where in my comment i said the whole series was terrible. But during reach development(when Microsoft started getting major input in the series), the series took a turn for the worst. Reach was awful, 4 was slightly better but classes ruined the core experience. I loved Halo 2 and 3, played more of those games than any else.

This series was already ruined with GoW Judgement so...

Judgment is god awful. If you take out a key core of the game ( active reload ) yeahhh time to stop playing

Yeah Judgement was terrible, but don't worry Microsoft Studios will manage to make it worse.

I loved the first 3 GoW games, hopefully Microsoft can actually take this in a good direction for once.
